I just bought an '09 F250 a couple of weeks ago and am going through some various things that need fixing up. It has the oval/oblong (cross-section) side steps. I needed to replace a couple of the plastic covers that go over the brackets and while taking the bolts out, I found the nylon "step" washers insude the tube are shot (as in disintegrated). There is a sort of aluminum nut on it also. Ford tells me that you cannot buy just the nuts/washers as they are "embedded" into the tube. Surely I don't have to buy a set of new or used side steps??
Does anyone know if there is a source for plastic washers with a step in them? I imagine the reason for the plastic washers is for electrical isolation to prevent corrosion. Could I perhaps use stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers in there?
Thx I.B., they just might have what I need! I will have to do a little measuring. I can't see any reason why they won't have one that will work. I will probably hae to use a metal nut and washer on the inside but that won't matter because it will be isolated.
I wonder what a body shop would do to fix something like this?
