It tells you there is a code set in the computer.
Likely a 7xx code indicating an electrical solenoid failure for one of the functions.
This is the way a trans issue is seperated from an engine issue.

Well, your trying to out think or second guess the system.
The light flashes because the computer detected a problem.
That's why it does what it does.
Get the code, look it up and it will give you a lead on what the issue is.
