Running Ethanol

Curious if anybody else is running on ethanol?
I have an 07 5.4 flex fuel and did an experiment for one of the classes that I teach. I drove 10 tanks gas, kept track of mileage and cost. Got about 16 mpg Then I switched and started driving on ethanol. I have been getting only 12.5 mpg. I knew there was going to be less but this was way less. I still have a few more tanks to go through before I finish the experiment and calculate the cost between the two. I have been getting E-85 for $3.29. Gas now is 3.85.
Also, did an experiment testing emissions as well. Ethanol produces far less CO2 and emissions. And my exhaust smells like moonshine.

How much is "far less" CO2 and emissions? Is that or is that not considering that ~1/3 more fuel is being used? Keep us up to date.

The ethanol produced about half as much CO2 as the regular gas. So when you figure out how much is used per mile its about 1/3 less overall.

One thing I've noticed running E-85 in a 2008 is that the mileage drop is not linear based on percentage of alcohol in the tank. If I fill the tank holding gas at half empty with E-85 (essentially mixing to make roughly E-50) there is not much of a drop in mileage. When you reach higher concentrations of E-85 in the tank the mileage really dives. Something to do with the engine management software/monitoring I imagine.

I watch mileage in realtime using a Scangauge II hooked to the OBD port. Since I tow and haul stuff long distances I've been able to save a chunk on fuel this way plus I have the optional large cap tank and sometimes carry a portable 30 gallon to take advantage of low gas/E85 prices I come across.
