will this engine work

Brother, I think if my truck had no engine or tranny, I would work towards the setup that I intended to use. I would look at a mid 90s truck for the W and an AOD tranny. These old trucks have plenty wind resistance so the AOD can really help with the mpgs. I think I would be looking EFI for my truck but that may not be in your plans.
Take your time do it right once, you have the rest of your life, lets keep mistakes to a minimum.

with that said- the 302 will mate up to an overdrive tranny- but i'm guessing the '76 transmission doesn't have an O/D gear.
if its a divorced transfer case, you should be able to use the transmission.
if its a married case- pass.
hopefully someone will be along to confirm.

When the Econoline was redesigned in 1975, only 3 engines were available thru 1978: 300 I-6, 351W and 460. 302 wasn't available until 1979.
The only V8 available in 1969/74 Econolines was the 302.
No engine mounting parts from any year Econoline can be used in F100/350's.
302: 1969/79 F100 & 1975/79 F150. These engine mounting parts can be used in 1965/68 F100 2WD's.
1977/79 F100/350 351M/400 2WD's used the same engine supports (aka towers, stands, perches) as 1969/79 F100/150 302.
Tell us a little about what's going on. Can you post, or link to any detailed photos of this project? What is your skill level? What kind of tools do you have access to? What kind of work space do you have to work in? How much time do you have to complete the truck? How much money do you have to apply to the project?
You left out the wiring on your first post, it makes it hard to answer your questions when we don't have all the facts or access. We don't sell here but the money thing can help us help you get on the right track.

So here's the deal as I see it...you have a blank canvas to work with...no engine, trans or wiring harness. At the
moment you're a bit scattered,
naturally, we all are when we get started! Basically starting from zero...if you got this truck for a song, and it's a shell, maybe use it as a parts truck and find a more complete slick??
If I were you, I'd start looking for a low 90's EFI 5.0 mustang, and pull the engine/AOD trans...these are widely
found engines with a crap-load of aftermarket mods available...engine mounts are a piece of cake, and so is running
exhaust headers at one point-the 302 leave a lot of room in the engine compartment...stick with the automatic.
I'm no expert on the wiring, but I do know that a new wiring harness I think goes for about $400 or so, and if you go
EFI from a Mustang, you'll have to integrate the electronics in there with the truck harness. There are other issues
such as the kick-down cable, modifying the floor shift mustang trans to column and fuel tank etc, but I know a lot
of guys have done this conversion...
Do some searching on the site here, a wealth of info is avail. I'll warn you, there are a few crotchety old sods here who
like to dispense their wisdom in an un-gentle manner
, it's kinda like taking a sip of water from a fire hose...so don't worry, you're not wasting anyone's time either...welcome to the forum Mate!

Rustywheel, the cab is wired, just not the engine comp.
I understand criticism and can take it also, I just don't want to overstep my boundaries being new to the board.
Plan on starting out with a "3G" alternator, and you won't even have to wire up an external voltage regulator.
for points ignition & charging, that leaves you with:
1. wire from ignition switch to coil positive
2. wire from alternator 'idiot light' to 3G alternator
3. wire from starter solenoid "S" terminal to coil positive
4. small wire from alt to battery positive
5. large wire from alt to starter solenoid
