Tailgate removal 89 f-150
I'm pulling the bed to change fuel pumps, everything is loose, just need a friend to help me lift. Thinking about pulling the tailgate to get the weight down. Do you have to remove the torx screws that hold the bottom hinge or can you just pop the gate out of the hinge somehow? Seems my old chevy gate just liffted out.

Yeah the tailgate just comes off. You unclip the hooks like the previous poster said. On the right side, there is a slot that at a 45 degree angle or so, the right side will slip out and you can just pull the tailgate off. Make sure you don't drop it .

Thanks, I knew there must be a trick, didn't seem right you would have to take the hinges out. Now the fuel pump(s). Only the back one is not working, but, I'm thinking about changing both while the box is off. Anyone thnik I should replace sending units as well? Aren't they part of the entire in-tank assembly?

I am gearing up to take the bed off my 1991 F150 also. I have also been debating whether to change both fuel pumps and I think I am going to. It's another $150 but what the hell.
Anyone know how many averaged strengthed men is required to lift the bed off the truck and move it to the side to set on the ground? I was hoping for just two....
Thanks for the tip about removing the tailgate. :7

I have everything undone and can lift one side pretty easily, with the tailgate off (thanks everyone) I think 2 should be ably to do it.
$150??? I just paid $40 plus $ for a new strainer. It has the pump, a new gasket, new fuel line clips and hardware for the electrical. I am assuming I will have to do some removal and install to the entire assembly. For $150, do you get the entire assembly, float sending unit etc?? Do you need all that??

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I think your truck has the low pressure pumps in the tank and a high pressure pump on the rail. Mine is a 1991 and has the high pressure pump in the tanks with no pump on the rail. I suppose they are just more expensive.... I have not even yet went to buy it but I did check at autozone.com and they list the pumps (with screen) as being about $150 each (slight difference from front to back).

Wouldn't be a bad idea to put some new body mount bushings in there, the old ones are probably cracked.

Tailgate removal 89 f-150
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jul-02 AT 09:57 PM (EST)]I'd say two people for the bed--one for each side. When I put a body lift on my f-150 I could easily pick up each side of the bed and hold it up while my slow-as-all-get-out helper took his time placing the spacers. Oh, and I left the tailgate on...it never occured to me to remove it....
edit: Oh, and I forgot to say that I have a tool box on the bed that is full of tools, spare parts and other mess...
