what bed for '77 crewcab?

What bed length would a 3/4 or 1 ton '77 crew cab have had? I'm looking at one for sale, and the seller says it's got an 8 foot flatbed on it now... but I thought they only came with a 6 foot bed back then. It's about a two hour drive away, so I haven't seen it in person yet. Seems pretty nice from the specs he told me though -- 400 with a 4 speed manual, 4x4, very little rust or dents, and a winch and flatbed, and a kingpin dana 60 front axle.

If I get it, I'll be looking to sell the '77 highboy I've got now, as well as the 93 diesel.

yeah pretty sure they were only available with the short bed, but if its a flatbed the bed may hang off the back of the frame or the frame may have been extended. They also made cab and chassis, I've seen a few that had crew cabs, so if the frame is flat and narrow its a cab and chassis and it could be as long as they wanted.
I was thinking the crewcabs never came from the factory as 4wd, but maybe I'm wrong. someone else will chime in.

If its a 77 its not a 1 ton 4wd. The only year you could get a 4wd f350 was 79 and still not in a crewcab.

If its a kp 60 and stock its a lowpinion and not worth anywhere near as much as a 78/9 high pinion 60 front.

4wd crews only came in a shortbed from the factory. IT could have been stretched or it could be a 2wd converted to 4wd.

Or it could be a stock shortbed with an 8 ft flatbed that has a 2ft overhang from the back of the frame. To many variables on a 30+ yr old truck to determine without pics.

Here's a few pics, from the craigslist ad.
1977 Ford Crew Highboy
I couldn't see much from it, other than it doesn't seem to sit as high as the highboys... but maybe that's just because it's so long. My '77.5 F250 sits a little higher I think. But, I'm also not convinced that it's a real highboy either, as it has the underbed fuel tank instead of the in cab fuel tank, and I've heard that the highboy's all had in cab tanks for the F250??

if its highboy it would have in cab tank, divorced transfer case, and narrow rear leaf springs and narrow rear frame. Its probably not.

yeah just looked at pics. doesn't look like a highboy at all to me. none of the pics show the back but i'm betting its a shortbed with a flatbed just hanging off the back a bit. axle looks like its in the right spot for short bed to me.

That's kind of what I was thinking -- it's a normal 4wd crew cab, but not a highboy. Which is still fine with me.... old crew cabs are cool. but if it was designed for a 6 foot bed, that probably means the axle is in the wrong place to swap my utility body on it in place of the flatbed. It's an 8 foot utility body. I'm going to ask him to take some measurements I think, before driving down there.

Thats got the external style lockouts so its a low pinion 60. Pretty much junk. Its thats the stock axle then its a highboy. Being a 77 however it could be either.

yeah, one decent pic from the bottom on the rear should be fine, and/or the measurement from the back of the cab to the axle line. I want to say I'm pretty sure its a factory 4wd, which according to dave means its a short bed, because I don't think you could get a solid axle under a 2wd and keep it that low.

the low pinions aren't total junk, its fine for what its been used for and if youre putting a utility body on it it sounds like it would probably be fine for you too. just don't plan on making a bunch of power, pounding it off road, or putting gigantic tires on it.

The low pinion front axle would be probably first on the replace list if any of those things are in your plans though.

Yeah, for me it would be a work truck, not a lifted offroad rig. Not that I never take the work truck off road.... but I have an old landrover that I'm modding for the more serious offroading.

How does the strength of the low pinion dana 60 compare to a high pinion dana 44 (that's what I have in the regular cab '77 F250 I have now).

my vote would probably go for the hp 44, better ground clearance, way better aftermarket, ultimate strength is probably similar. I've never owned an lp60 so I don't know for sure, but they don't have a great reputation. and iirc the spline counts are really coarse.

It could have been converted to 4wd and kept low but its alot of work. Thats what i planned on doign with mine until i got into slave cyl/driveshaft clearence issues.

I went and looked at it yesterday -- it's a low pinion Dana 60, divorced T-case, looks like a 400M engine like he said, runs very nice, no blue smoke on start at all, which lead some credence to the claim that it's only got 20k miles on it. 30k on the truck, but it's probably rolled at least once by the looks. The warn winch looks to be around 1977 vintage too. NO RUST AT ALL. WOW. Looks like an arizona truck, but it seems to have been Colorado its whole life. Needs a new passenger side front fender, but is all good metal, and good glass, other than that. 7 foot flatbed, put on a frame that used to hold a 6 foot bed it looks like. I put a deposit down to hold it and am going to pick it up next week. For a crew cab, he's not asking much compared to most I see (plus it's only two hour drive, not 2 day...

'77 single cab 4x4 F250 and '94 extended cab turbodiesel 4x4 F250 are now officially for sale Can't afford to keep them all.
