Front end "Groan"

That is the best I can explain it. My buddy's 2000 Super Duty 7.3 is making a groaning noise when we were in it today. He said it's been doing it for and a week and a half. You can't do anything to reproduce the noise ie. turning left or right....

When driving down the street all of a sudden you hear a groan/hum with a slight vibration to it. It will come then go and come back then go away. Doesn't matter if the truck is warm or not. You can definitely fell it in the floor. He thinks it was coming from the Left front, he was driving, I said right front but that's where I was sitting.

We think it might be something but want to get others input before he starts to throw money at it.

Factory locking hubs were just replaced with Warn Premiums but problem existed before the switch.

Any ideas?

If it's a clunk, I'd look at sway bar end bushings. If it's goes on for a few seconds, I'd look at the wheel bearings or spindle bearings, and a locking hub (even a Warn) that might be hanging up and engaging randomly. Does the vibration happen with the hubs locked or unlocked - or both?

Unlocked, haven't driven around with them locked to test that.

Could be tie rod ends or ball joints, also. They don't usually make noise when bad, but, they could...Might just be time to take the front end apart and redo it. It's not very hard or expensive to do it yourself.

My truck had a similar sounding vibration a couple months ago. Vibration frequency did not change with road speed and it could not be reproduced on demand.

Turned out to be the needle bearing in the RF hub. Axle was rattling around in there.

I would add u-joint,but if your sure its in the front & drive line & axles are not turning, then I would withdraw this idea.

I had the exact same problem and suspected the needle bearings in the hub. I planned on doing a brake job anyway. I pulled my hubs and my needle bearings looked like the picture "honeydew" posted. NAPA part number BRG B2110. Service separtely and easily from the hub/bearing assembly. I think its good policy for all 4wd guys to pull hubs and check/repack from time to time. Theres not much for grease in there from the factory

Just to add, those bearings are only in use when the hubs are unlocked. It allows the wheel hub to rotate around the stub shaft. Locking the hubs would make the noise go away in my case.

I had similar issue in my '00 F350. Turned out to be the needle bearings in the LF hub. They were shot and apparently had been for some time. I had just got the truck and tore into it as soon as I noticed the niose. The needle bearings were completely gone. And the best part was that it ganked up my axle shaft! So yeah I agree, check those needle bearings on a regular basis!

Will do as long as he doesn't tear it apart while I'm not there.
