trying to decide on getting new doors or patching them? bottoms of the doors are pretty rusted . tops are good just surface. is it a pain to try and cut and fit the patches.... would i be better off to just find new doors? anyone with any experience....
Never had any experience with new doors but I've seen guys use patch panels and it seems like they end up being Bondo buckets after. I am in the same boat as you and not to sure what way to go?
I always go looking in the junk yard or online and if the price is too high then I make a plan to fix things. Like the bed in my truck I'm redoing the floor/wheel wells because it's much cheaper than buying and un rusted bed. Just got to deside if the price compared to your time and see what's worth it.
I'd avoid the aftermarket doors, they don't fit well from personal experience. If the doors are salvageable and you have the skills I would recommend fixing them, if not I'd look for used replacements.
Starting with rust free doors is easier and quicker but not always available or economical. I've done patch panels with good results. Suggestions for a good result
- get a "how to" book or video
- after you get the damaged skin off, weld repair the bottom of the frame as and if needed
- before welding clean to steel and prime with weld through primer
- flange the repair panel for a strong easy to smooth weld. Butt welding is required only at the edges.
- after welding and grinding, use waterproof filler for the first coat. Metal to Metal or JB weld works well. Then smooth with regular bondo.
- make sure the drain holes are open
- Seam seal carefully
- When all done and painted, saturate the inside bottom of the door with waxy anti-rust until it runs out the drains. I like the Eastwood stuff.
