well I finally finished replacing the broken rear leafs what a BS job the bolts would not come out for the life of me, anway so I have new spring packs on bougth sides, everthing is all buttoned up and torqed and I'm still getting aloud bang in the backend it happens when I put it in reverse but not in drive it also happens when I give it some gas like from stop sign to stop sign, whats the problem here I had to broken springs which I thought that must be the cause of the nosie soI put new ones in and I'm still haveing the same problem. hope someone can give me a step in the right directon. thanks
I change 1 spring pack at atime to the axle would stay centered or in line also it was making that sound when I bought it thats when I noticed the broken springs. whats spring wrap?
It's not spring wrap, it's called axle wrap. Axle wrap is when the axle want to twist on it self (it moves forwards or backward at a slight angle). The reason I think you have axle wrap is beacuse you said that the noise only happens under heavy acceleration. If that's true then I would bet $100, that you in fact do have axle wrap!!
thanks steve83 thats what happenes when you got 700 ponies not? haha. so can you tell me how much you have to torque the yoke to and how do I no if it's loose shake it or just torque it back to the proper torque I need details if it's not much to ask. thanks alot .
You can check it by shaking it, but make sure the e-brake is set and the transmission is in NEUTRAL so there's no load on the driveline. There is no torque spec on the yoke (pinion) nut - you tighten it until you get the proper pinion bearing preload. Read this and this.
so I put her in neutral with the e-brake of course and went under and gave the shaft a shake and it seems to have play where the drive shaft meets the ?? not sure what it's called but it's like a short shaft and it bolts up to the rearend with a u-joint in between it. now I'm not sure if there is suppost to be play there or not. it's the splines maybe worn I'm not sure hope you understand and can help I think that shaft is called a slip yoke (maybe)
No, there should be NO play anywhere in the driveline, other than in the suspension. You can grease it to eliminate the noise for a few thousand miles, but eventually you'll have to rebuild or replace the d'shaft. Check the prices on new & used shafts before paying for a rebuild. A new one is ~$250 from Six States Distributors and used ones go for ~$50.
just a thought .
I had a 9" limited slip that the "hat" cracked on . It drove just fine until i would get on the gas enough to force the clutch pack apart and then I would get one hell of a banging sound as the parts seperated from the force . You might want to look into it .
no I never checked the shock bushings, but today I was 4x4 and when the hubs where locked and it was in 4high there was no back coming from the rear I rand it pretty had in drive and was slamming it in to reverse and now sounds., so chould it be the transfercase or what.?
well in 4x4 i would think axle wrap would be less because the front wheels are pulling the rear a little bit.so yuo may not hear a bang. you put new leaf springs in and didnt change the shocks to new ones? i would replace the shocks and this may help the axle wrap and eliminate your bang. that is if the rest of the drive line is tight. climb under tommorow and check those shock bushins first.
let us know what the verdict is
