Hey guys, I'm Randy from Colorado. I've been trolling here a bit over the last few months but finally decided to join. I recently inherited my father's 73 f-250 Ranger XLT Camper special (2wd)that he purchased brand new in 72. She has 101k actual miles on the clock and is completely original and untouched with the exception of a 2 bbl Holley carb, vintage hooker headers, MSD ignition, and an aftermarket steering wheel. She is a New Mexico rust free survivor and will be cleaned up and repainted this summer.
She's a well optioned truck: p/s, p/b, a/c (with R-12 and still works!). It even sports the original 16.5 wheels :-)
I'll post up a few pics a little later. I look forward to learning a lot here!
Nice looking truck. Being rust free your way ahead of the game, that and you know the history on it. I'm lucky there too, since I have my Dad's 76 F-350 SCS that's been in the family since 1976. Problem is, its been sitting for the last 10yrs here in Western Washington so its got some cancer. But I have my ways of combating that.
Thanks! I'm certainly glad that there are no rust issues to deal with. If only my 66 Mustang could say the same! :-)
Any pointers on where I can find a seat upholstery kit to redo the interior? I believe the interior color is one of the "ginger" colors but I can't find it listed with any of the resto parts shops. Any shade of brown appears to have been an uncommon option in 73
Well, I spent some time cleaning her up and found several items that just made my day!
-original owners manual in mint condition
-original Ford service guideline pamphlet
-original key replacement tab
-oil change pamphlet (in the shape of an oil can)
-purchase order from when the truck was purchased new (for the whopping price of $4482.87)
-25+years of vehicle registrations.
- this one cracked me up- FCC license for CB radio (this was a requirement back in the 70's before you could use one)
It's very cool to have original "glove box candy"!
Sweet ride buddy and the extra goodies in the glove box is a cool bonus. You have two horns on your truck, one on each side of the rad. Is that normal? Because mine only has one, thought it sounded kinda weak.
Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated. As far as the horn goes, I'm 99% certain it came that way from Ford.
Yeah, there was a dual horn option. One horn mounted on each side of the radiator. One was high pitch and the other low pitch. It's an easy option to add. All there is is the second horn and a wire that connects the two horns together.
I have the same set-up on my truck.
Ahhhh ok, cool Mike, thanks for the info. Good to know I can beef it up pretty easily. Cheers
Just so you know, if you look at the picture you'll see there are two different horns. One has a right hand mount and the other a left hand. Also, the horns themselves are marked. They will have either "HI" or "LO" cast into the horn.
It's not too clear but in the picture you can see the "LO" on the horn, this was while I had the horns apart, repairing and detailing them.
After sitting for several months, I finally got the old girl out and got her running again. The carb had a few minor problems (new power valve, needle and seat, and accel pump) but she now runs like an FE should! I drove it around the block for the first time in nearly 20 years which was bittersweet since my dad passed away nearly 2 years ago (The last time I drove the truck, I was running an errand for him back in the early/mid 90's).
Next up is some serious engine compartment detail along with a fresh coat of paint. I'm excited about getting her back into tip top shape! I'll start a build thread when I get more together so stay tuned. I have a few questions that I need to post as well so thanks in advance for any assistance!
Congrats and sorry for your loss. I had lost my step dad last winter. But I'm glad that you have history with the truck it will be soothing as you work on it. Bringing those memorys back.
