A few weeks ago I purchased a 99 F 150 S/C, 5.4, with 77, 000 miles. I have notice when I accelerate I hear a subtle noise, sounds kind of like chains shaking, very faintly. I know it sounds weird but that is my best description. Once the truck gets to the correct speed based on the pressure on the gas peddle the noise stops. Sorry, not sure of the correct auto lingo. Is this just a Ford noise? I am worried it might be the rings or the valves.
Any ideas or thoughts?
A friend says not to worry, he thinks it is just a normal noise from the Triton V8.
I have experienced that on the few Tritons that I have driven, they are a bit noisy under load. Could be a bit of piston slap(nothing to worry about, just annoying) or just a unique sound to the engine. All engines have a different tone to them, with a trained ear, you can tell the difference between a 302 and 351W, a big block chevy and Olds v8.
It is really hard to say without actually hearing it. A service writer at your local Ford dealership may ride around the block with you to listen and tell you for free. It's worth a shot.
