hey guys, i just got my 86 f150 and noticed that it had some issues with the radio cutting on and off when i acclerated but figured it was just a loose connection behind the unit. But last night was my first night drive and whenever I pushed the gas past a certain point, ALL lights went off . Headlights, tail lights, dash lights, and radio. As soon as you let off the gas it comes back on. And if you baby the hell outta it then it wont do it again until next time I try to take off again. I do a lot of driving at night and need this fixed quick. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any ideas?
I would look up under the dash and see if the throttle linkage is contacting the wire harness or see if it is touching loose wires that are unsecured. People do some stupid stuff with wiring especially when installing aftermarket stereos.
If the PO installed the stereo, then I bet you'll find a rat's nest of wires in there.
I looked at the linkage and couldn't find anything it was hitting. And I just pulled the radio out and im not sure I wanna insult rats nests by comparing it to what I saw. But what im chasing now is two heavier gauge wires that I found are completely rubbed through the insulation in several places. Not sure what they are yet but they have Ford taping on them like they were done by a dealer WAY back in the day
Could be the G-force of acceleration making the wires move just enough to ground out. Just tape up any bad spots you see and then take it out for a test drive.
Will do. After looking at all of this. Im just thankful it didn't catch on fire. I also found a wire ran (poorly) from the brake pedal to a random fuse and shoved underneath. Just fixed that. But apparently this truck is gonna be my problem child. Still love it though
