Do I really have to buy the Vin "F" water pump for my 96 F350 ambulance

I have a 96 F350 7.3 liter turbo diesel that needs a new water pump. When I look online for a new pump there are pumps listed specifically for a 1996 Ford F-350, 7.3L Diesel, Turbocharged and then there are a few pumps that are for Vin "F" trucks.

I was told that the "F" in the vin indicates that it is a fire vehicle. My truck was originally a paramedic ambulance but now I use it for camping mostly.

Do I need to purchase this vin "F" pump or can I just go ahead and order one of the non Vin "F" pumps? Will it fit because in the pics they look the same to me?

Seems like half the time I need a part for this truck, there are Vin "F" parts and non vin "F" parts and sometimes I come across a part that includes the "ambulance package". Can you please clear up this confusion for me as Vin "F" parts are usually 3 times the price. Thanks

I don't claim to know anything about diesels, but it could be that this vin F model was an 8 rib serpentine belt model for a 200amp alternator. If thats the case, you definitely need to buy that one.

If you mean the 8th digit of the vin being F then YES.
That has absolutely NOTHING to do with the ambulance pkg but EVERYTHING to do with it being a powerstroke engine

The man with the info chimes in. Good stuff Brad. Did all ambulance package conversions get the 8 rib belt setup?

Yea my truck definately has a 200 amp alt and 8 groove pulleys but I thought all 96 f350 7.3 diesels used 8 grove pulleys.

Damn that pump is $340! These is no way I can afford that right now. Is it possible to buy a different pump and just change the pulley to an 8 groove pulley? Of can anyone recommend where I might be able to find this water pump for cheaper or can I have it rebuilt somewhere? I've looked at RockAuto, AutoZone, Oreily's and PartsGeek. If I remember correctly PartsGeek was the only one that even mentioned this Vin "F" pump.

I gotta get this truck going as it is currently my only mode of transportation. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

They Do. 95-03 7.3 PSD's used 8 rib pulleys and belts. The 94.5 used a 7 rib that was a carry over from the IDI's.

I wouldn't waste my time or money on a junkyard waterpump.

I've seen those pumps on ebay, and I have tried Rock Auto but I guess what I am trying to find out is, why does Partsgeek.com claim that if my truck is a Vin "F" type, I need to purchase a specific (more expensive) pump. Why? What is the difference? If they all have 8 grove pulleys why does a Fire vehicle require a special pump? Or does it? Because other than Partsgeek.com, no other parts house even mentions a Vin "F" specific pump. Do you guys think I'd be safe just ordering the standard water pump for my vehicle? Also what would be a good quality brand? I plan on keeping this truck for a very long time. Thanks

The "F" in the vin just denotes that it's a powerstroke.I don't know what's with parts geeks but your truck takes the same pump as the rest of the 7.3 PSD's. I'd buy from either Ford or NAPA
