Well in an attempt to replace my up pipes I have ran into a dilemma. The top bolt on the bottom is frozen in place. The pipes are out everything went fairly smooth until that stubborn broken bolt. I have tried everything I can think of which includes spraying PB blaster for 5 days before starting the project. Heat, drills, more blaster, heat, hammer again, a BFH and punch. It is still sitting and I am lost as to what to try next. The space is so limited as to what I can get in there.. Any sugestions??
I am going to have to get some more spray and let it sit for a while in hopes that it will see it my way..
Just thought I would share.
Try to get some transmission fluid and acetone mixed as a lubricant. I don't have the exact measurements to put together. But at least try the transmission fluid on the bolt.
If you heat the surrounding casting/nut area with a torch, and then quickly get vise grip pliers on the bolt stub (if there's a grippable amount) you can often back it out. You need an oxy/acet torch, not a propane plumbers torch. Shield surrounding items and have a fire extinguisher handy. Have a buddy standing by with a garden hose, too.
If you don't want to attempt this, you could perhaps drive it to a decent muffler shop and let them try.
Can you snap a pic of the bolt in question? Still trying to figure out which one you are talking about. In any case, if you have a welder, find a nut large enough to slip over the bolt shaft and weld it to the broken stud. Once you've got it on there, grab whatever size wrench/socket you need to get it off and get to it. Soak liberally in PBlaster before you start to tackle it.
to confirm, its the part of the up pipes that connect ot the manifold. those have two bolts and nuts holding them on.
Mine broke too and was frozen. couldn't turn the bolt either. I did just what you did. broke it cussed a bit. then PBlaster it and walked away for a day to cool off.
after many attempts
granite I have a van so I can actually get to mine fairly easiley. but still had trouble.
I used a punch and a 3 pound sledge.
it was coroded and full of rusty gunk.
I can post a pic when I get home to my computer if you like.
It is the driver side bolt stub. The one on the top part of the manifold. These both were seized but the bottom of the two was easy to access with the punch. There is not enough bolt to grab on either side. VERY ugly IMO.
I had to get the 4" grinder to the passenger side bolts and cut them off fairly easy. Had a fight with said grinder on the driver side and that bad boy cut my finger to the white meat.Had to cuss a bit and walked away now for several hours. All in all these new uppies are ready to go in except for this one issue. I hope I can get this done without having to get a wrecker and break out my wallet any more than I have already. All in all, right now: this sucks.

I am still alittle confused? Do you mean the exhaust manifold to up pipe or do you mean the manifold that is attached to the turbo. Which
I call a baby's butt. Well if you mean the exhaust manifold to up pipe. I would just cut them bolts in half with sawall or small cutoff wheel. I did and then went to the hardware store and bought new grade8 bolts. Now if it is the bolt in the baby's butt it will make your life so much easier to remove turbo and pull the baby's butt out of the top. Then you can set it on the ground , heat it and get good leverage on it. Also if that bolt gets tight coming loose, just reheat & lube, retighten and work the bolt back and forth.

I would highly recommend replacing all the hardware you take out. Your local IH dealer should stock them. When I did mine it was less than twenty bucks. I cut mine off with a cut off wheel as well.
Ok the one that is giving me fits is the manifold to up pipe. The old pipes are out but I have one of the bolt shanks stuck in the top bolt hole, in the driver side exhaust manifold. Not the collector{baby's but}.All of the old junk is out. The old ones just fell apart when it all came out. Did not know they were leaking that bad. I have now tried to use the transmission fluid and it is sitting over night...Still banging my head here
It's problematic for sure from what I've gathered. Do you not have new bolts or is that why you don't want to break the old ones? I'd cut it and not think twice but that's just me. Good luck.
