v10 5-7 mpg???

So Just recently upgraded trucks. My last truck was (still have it) a 1999 f250 6.8l v10 2wd 202,000 miles. my new one is a 2004 f250 with the same 2 valve v10, 92,000 miles only this one is a 4x4 (both are crew cabs).

My 1999 gets 9-14mpg average but my new one only gets 5-7 mpg (8.4 on a good day) average and I get exactly 200 miles from the 24 gallon tank before the gas light comes on. I cant help but wonder if i have a bad injector, computer system or vacuum line, or if the 4x4 really makes that much of a difference.

note: my '99 feels more responsive at the throttle (they both have the good cable throttles) but only this one can spin the tires at any take off (and even do burnouts) and seems all around more powerful.
My question is this: How can I get better MPG out of my 2004? and has anyone had this issue before/what are the possible fixes?

I don't know how to check what axles I have either. on the '04's door sticker, under "axle" it says c1, but on my '99 it just says 31 . just wondering how can I figure out which axles i have?

I was also wondering if anyone has a tuner on their V10's? and also, what kind? (fuel efficiency, towing, race???)

Thanks!

The 4x4 won't be that parasitic, i have my hubs locked AND had a vacuum leak through my egr and was getting 9. Without hubs locked, and vacuum leak fixed i get 14 on a good day.

You can find out by comparing you axle codes to a chart online, front axle codes are on the diff i believe and rear on the door. C1 is 3.73 limited slip i'm sure, pretty standard. 31 i believe is 3.73 open diff.

I thought theyd be the same ratio because they both get the same RPM's at the same speeds. Now Ive got to try and find out why im getting only 6mpg... thanks for your reply!

Maybe a brake has gotten stuck on its sliding pin? A dragging brake would certainly cause horrific mileage and a general feeling of unresponsiveness.

Just throwing it out.

May I suggest filling the fuel tank up with fuel from maybe another station(if you always use the same one),start her up and head right for the highway.Leave it locked out of overdrive for the first 30-45min running it good and hard to get everything hot.The higher rpm's and heat may loosen any carbon that may be built up on the back side of the valves do to them turning faster to clean them.We service a fleet of V10 courier trucks that idle around the city all day. They come in every now and then complaining about rough running, poor fuel economy(worse than normal) and rough idle.We usually poor a bottle of cumbustion/injector cleaner into the tank and drive the bag off them. This helps alot, maybe worth a shot. The numbers you are getting are too low, unless your pulling 10,000lbs all the time.

@mikeismadness I have driven the 99 for three years, got about 9-10 in the winter in that one.

@truckfella I will check out the calipers when I get the truck back from the dealer (i just took it in for rear main warranty work)

@BUNN Man I appreciate the advice, as much as this may cost me to do, i think that may be worth trying. I never thought of it that way. Thanks!

Go through the usual "tune up" items plus a few more:

1) Clean the MAF
2) Change the fuel filter, unless it's already been done lately.
3) Check the brakes, as mentioned above.
4) Check the fuel pressure - too high (rich) or too low (lean), both will make MPGs suffer. Yes, lean will make the MPGs worse - less power, you open the throttle more to make up for it, and the result is using MORE gas overall. Same result with a dirty MAF.
5) Check your tire pressure, and compare those tires to the '99 - are the '99 tires highway tires, while the other has AT's that are softer or worse, a "D" rating?

You'd be amazed what a dirty MAF will do the MPGs...

I average 10 running 35 12/50s as good as 13 easy highway. Anyone know if a Cat converter going bad can effect milage.

im in the same boat. im lucky if i get 200 miles per full fill up. so i think im right around 8 MPG. my truck doesnt spin tires at all. i have a 4 inch lift on 33's but dont think that it should make that big of a difference. its funny cuz my edge insight tells me i averge 14.7 i wouldnt mind that actually happening.

what is the fuel pressure supposed to be at? easiest way to check it? shouldnt i have a fuel pressure reading from my edge insight?

You need to put a module on it to adjust your speedo for the larger than factory tires. That throws off how your speedo reads which in turn won't give you accurate fuel mileage figures. I put one on dads 04 Powerstroke when we lifted it with 37's. Even one size larger diameter tire will put it off.

I input that data into my edge cuz it asked for all that info.
