I recently had my heads pulled for some work. when I got it back it had a small dark layer in the degas bottle. I drove it for a couple of weeks to see if it got worse it did not. So I'm going to flush the system and was told I needed to pull the thermo out and put it back together and run the truck with cascade dish soap in it for 30-45 min drain it run it with just water for 30-45 min drain and fill with anti. I said WTF and was told this is a common practice on big rigs. Anyone ever heard this.
-I know that years ago when we had nothing to loose on old Ford gasser cars and trucks we used Red-Devil Lye drain cleaner and it actually worked pretty well with no ill effects.

A local shop recommends using liquid cascade for a cooling system cleaner, says nothing works better or is so gentle on your hands.
But seriously, I used it on my mother's 1997 Merc Mountaineer...and had no ill effects. The water looked like used motor oil when it came out.
I've used the powdered stuff on a friends truck after an injector cup failure contaminated the cooling system.
I think he even drove it around for a few days with the detergent, then flushed with water, then soaped it again... then flushed thoroughly with water several times.
EDIT: From what I remember, the cheaper the soap, the better... Fewer dyes and fragrances.

Yes, one of the company shops I drive for does this at coolant flush time...finishes with a bottle of Jet-Dry in the next to last flush to be sure all the soap is out. Then final flushes with distilled water (they have their own machine for making distilled water).
THat stuff is meant to wash out grease n stuff from you pots, pans and dishes... So it does the same in your engine. It will clean out your cooling system pretty good.
I use dish soap to wash my hands after working on a car or truck. Breaks up the oil and grease real good and my hands feel sooo soft...
This might be a slight hijack, but instead of buying distilled water just collect rainwater and run it thru a filter and you will have all you need for watering plants, batteries and cooling systems. Been doing it for yrs and no problems. I have an attachment to my down spout on my house and i collect water in cleaned out i gal milk jugs. I always have 20 gals on hand. Of course this could be an issue in some of the drier climates.

OK Now that for the most part works great... BUT!! In some cities, like I believe in Aurora, CO ... You will actually get fined for collecting rain water. The city feels that you are taking away from them so if they see a rain water collection system...they write ya up for it, Dorks.
