MSD ignition

I have a 73 ford f100, that I am working on rewiring, its quite the project but Painless Wiring kits makes it fairly easy. Anyway I bought a new MSD distributor along with a coil because I would like a stronger spark and an upgrade from the stock system. I read all the instructions before I took the existing distributor out, marking the timing and what not. The problem is that I can't get the oil pump shaft to line up so the distributor can slip in..any suggestions?

Thanks!

Take a long 1/4" extension and turn the oil pump shaft until it's aligned, or just bump the starter with the dizzy in place and it will drop in.

The shaft length on the new dizzy is the same as the old dizzy, correct?

Mine would not line up. With it in the oil pump, make sure it's in the pump, I used some grease to hold the top of the shaft centered in block. Dropped in dizzy and done. I hate to admit this but I've had to drop the oil pan twice till I learned the grease trick.

Could try bumping a breaker bar on the crank bolt... Might be safer than a quick crank from the starter.

A problem with Ford is when you pull the distributer out the pump shaft would come out of the pump with it and then fall into the pan. The pump drive shafts now come with a little compression washer on them. You put the shaft in from the bottom and the washer hits the block where the distributer sits. This prevents the pump shaft from coming out of the pump. it makes since that it would also center the shaft somewhat as well.

In your case just turn the Rotor a hair until it drops in.

This is what I had to do also, but I used a glob of vasoline (put in place with a wooden dowel) to hold the oil pump drive up in the center of the hole so the distributor would seat all the way.
