Ran my 1994 f150 5.8L E40D through a puddle that was deeper than I thought... died almost instantly, got it home drained all the fluids and I onlt clicks doesn't even crank.. put in a brand new starter today and still clicks, but twice it actually cranked for about 2 seconds then went back to clicking (while I had it hooked up to my van with jumpers) how do I fix it? this truck's my daily driver!
Take off the starter and turn the key. I assume it will be OK since it's new. So that means either the starter doesn't have enough power from the battery to turn the motor or something in the motor is causing extra friction. It sort of sounds like not enough power to the starter.
Did you change the solenoid too ? Bad ground at starter ? check connections at starter (big wire) and at solenoid (small wires) . Just my 2 cents. Good luck.
As str8six said, you're probably hydro-locked. You sucked water into the intake, now it's game over. Your 2 second crank was probably just past the bent rod. You may be lucky and fried a fusible link or solenoid, but I doubt it.
My daughter did that to her Scion after a big rain and insurance paid for a new motor due to the deep water in the street.
it could be anything really.
first i would pull the spark plugs and try to turn it over, see if anything comes out of the plug holes.
if nothing there, check all wire connections, including grounds. third, check battery.
i was going to say turn it over by hand but since its in the truck it adds some difficulty and since its a auto you cant pull start and pop the clutch to see if if turns over of if its stuck, i bent a rod in an oliver tractor once, i think it was my 1770 and ran it like that for 2 years tore it apart found a bent rod and a piston that had a chipped skirt so a bent rod can be ran but it can also do damage so its your call. i would replace the battery first just to see or pop the one from a good vehicle in it to see if that makes it crank and then start from there.
To check for a hydrolock take a socket and breaker bar on the big bolt on the front of the crankshaft and see if the engine turns. If you can't turn the engine, remove all the spark plugs and turn the engine with the socket at least four full turns. Then turn the engine a while with the starter. You would probably still have to take further steps to get all the water out of the cylinders so the engine would start.
Took out all the plugs amd sure enough they were rusty and wet... tried cranking it over just the click, another thing with the key in the on position, fuel pump comes on my stereo comes on.. I crank and it all shuts off, I release the key back to ON and everything resets, fuel pump come son again, stereo presets and clock reset. the I tried jumping it again to try to crank gave it bout 15 mins turned the key and everything went dead.. no dash lights no stereo nothing...
Sounds like you got a loose or dirty connection with one of the battery cables. Or a bad battery cable. You also might make sure your battery is well charged and good.
