Recently got a 01 f250 with the 5.4 Triton. Had some problems moving. It will idle fine but when you put it in gear she falls on her face and will barely move. Put new plugs in and after only about 10-15 minutes of running plugs are black as coal. I know there must be a fuel problem but what would cause this. Any help would be appreciated.
the computer in these trucks reads the MAF (mass airflow senser) and the O2 sensers to adjust the fule time that the injecter is on find out witch one isnt working you must get it scand for codes find a good repair shop that can read it while its running that will show you more
Swapped out the MAF off of another truck, hopefully O2 sensor. I have a friend who used to have a repair shop and still has the computer scanner, will get up with him to scan for codes, thanks.
The local Ford dealership should have this if not try a NAPA or some other auto parts store.
What you need to clean the MAF is a can of MAF Sensor Cleaner. MAKE SUER that the truck has
not been running for 15 minutes and remove the MAF sensor assembly from the truck. The instructions
on the can are your friend so be sure to read them. Give it a good cleaning and then give it time to dry.
DO NOT turn power until the MAF is dry. I have cleaned my MPAs in many trucks and the difference is
very noticeable when they are dirty. Also if you have a aftermarket air filter that is the oil type you
may need to do this more often.
Also on terminology if plugs are black they are not burnt. They would be a tan/whitish color with melting
of the electrodes. When they are black they are working on being fouled. Here is a chart on what to look for
Also you may want to read this page on plugs if you want to. Spark Plugs Overview
The only reason I bring up terminology is it is a lot easier when everyone is speaking the same
language and using the same terms to describe things.
Please come back and let us know how it ti doing.
Good luck
Everything I find says I don't have a MAP sensor on this truck, but a MAF which has been changed. I will put it on the computer tomorrow and see what codes come up. Also took the cat off completely problem is still there.
Yeah you have a mass air flow sensor in the air intake. take off the filter element and youll see it about 6" up the intake tube. i know 6.0s have a MAP. id guess an O2 sensor, but not sure if those throw CELs or not?
That may be a bad sensor or broken wire/plug. If you can get
a diagram of the location for the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensors that
is where I would start looking. Also tracing the wiring back to the
main harness and look for any chafing. Places that can happen are
where the harness is compressed by something. It can also happen
without any evidence of pressure on the harness and be a real pain to find.
Also look for oily wiring.
Are IAT and MAF the same? All I can find for IAT location is on the intake by the filter exactly where the MAF is. If not does anyone know the location of then IAT?
