Thumbs down E350 rear axle specs

Hello,

I recently swapped a 1997 rear axle into my 1995 E350. Neither axle had the id tag it was supposed to, so the only identification I have is the axle code on the door jamb. The original claimed to be a code 33, which should be a Dana 6250, and the replacement is a code 39, a Ford 6250. The auto parts store manual gives specs for E150, E250, and E350 as well as Dana vs. Ford. Problem is, the way they are grouped, it is not clear which specs belong to which combination. This is an issue because even though the new axle is working fine, it has a slight oil drip from the pinion flange seal. I need the drive pinion nut minimum torque, drive pinion rotation preload, and the torque specs for the axle shaft bolts and the wheel bearing adjusting nut. Does anybody know what they are, or where I can find them?

Thanx

you should be able to find them in the chiltons manual or similar.

or you can cheat like i did when i replaced the pinion seal in the dana 60 under my f250, i used a paint pen to mark where the pinion nut was set, rattled it off, replaced the seal, and reinstalled the nut to the exact same position. thats assuming the ford axle has a seal that can simply be removed that way without tearing down the whole axle, and i haven't had the ford axle apart to know. someone here will know

I wish it was that simple. Around here I can only find Haynes manuals. It lists specs for a Ford rear axle, but it looks as though they refer to a semi-floating design. It only shows Dana full-floating specs, and they are different from the Ford specs. The procedure you describe is specifically discouraged. The technique recommended involves measuring the preload torque and tightening the pinion nut so that preload is equal (or increase if it's below spec). Again, the Ford and Dana specs are different.

Thanx for the speedy reply.

Earlier I got this list from this forum when I was planning the swap:

33 Dana 6250 3.54
35 Ford 6250 4.10
38 Ford 6250 3.08
39 Ford 6250 3.55

My old axle was a code 33, so the 39 looked suitable. However, as you can see, it is listed as a Ford axle. The Haynes manual shows different specs for Ford and Dana, but I think one is for semi-floating and the other is full-floating. It would be helpful to have complete Dana specs, though. Then, I could at least compare the semi-floating Dana specs to the specs in my manual. I looked at the site you mentioned, but final assembly specs that I needed were not listed. They said to refer to the vehicle service manual. How do you suggest I send you my email address?
