Starting Issue/Jegs Question

I had my battery tested at Advance auto because of a very slow cranking issue and it passed with 12.52 volts and 595 cold cranking amps when its rated for 731. Is this enough to crank the engine over normally? I know 12.6 volts is ideal and what it should sit at but 12.52 is not much of a variation. If this battery is okay, then im still having the slow starting. The volt meter always reads just over half in the cab, all lights work fine and dont dim but even after a trickle charge for 12 hours the truck cranks very slowly, like barely enough to start the truck. Could this just be a solenoid problem? bad contact in the solenoid? or could the starter not be making good contact? Also, no parts stores in my area sell transmission cooler lines by the length to bend yourself and the only website ive found that have pre-made lines for my truck is jegs but there is no description of picture of the part. Any input on that? heres the link: Right Stuff GTV8601

I would start with cleaning the battery posts and terminals really well. Then I would make sure all of the ground cables and ground surfaces are clean and tight as well. also Make sure that the positive cable is attached to the starter well and not a little loose.

Your battery should be plenty strong to crank the motor over at a vigorous rate. If all the stuff I mentioned above checks out then the starter may be on its way out.

I have a thread in this section where it shows how to rebuild a starter. I will post a link if I find it.

Yes, make sure all your primary connections are good and the cables aren't corroded (clamp-on terminal ends are bad news and should be used only for short-term emergency fixes).

Also pay attention to your ground connection from the battery to the block.

There are only a few things this problem could be caused by. You might take it to Sears or maybe Pep Boys or a full-service gas station and have them do a load test while the starter motor is operating, it'll tell you how many amps the starter motor is drawing.

I had advance auto do a load test and the test said the battery was okay. I will check all terminals, but I'm starting to think its the starter. The reason I am thinking this is because it has been consistently starting like this since I got the truck. If it was a lose terminal or corrosion I would think it would be spotty in starting or cranking. No point in rebuilding this starter, a new one is only 60 dollars, might as well go that route.

A starter can be tested on the bench, I would do that - remove it and take to a parts store.

A "new" one from a parts store is a crap shoot these days, you'll find this out if you hang around FTE for a while and read these posts. My personal preference would be to fix/rebuild what I've already got but that's just my opinion.

Corroded connections can lead to all sorts of bizarre symptoms, did Advance to a starter draw test?

Working on a fleet that all run on three batteries each and tons of cable, start there. Always start at the beginning of the circuit and work back. Battery first, starter last. Check those cables very closely.

I had heard of those places and it always seemed strange that people of a given state weren't smart enough to pump their own gas. But, then I visited one of them, NJ, and I understood. Having said that, apparently the residents are wising up as they seem to be leaving faster than they are being replaced. How else would you explain all of the tunnels and bridges being free to go into NJ but charging to get out?

lol. I think there might actually be one here in my town but I don't know if they have fuel or not. (Had to word that carefully). Just pullin' your leg.

That's a strange law. Too bad they can't make it illegal to charge so much for it.

I would have just brought the truck to Advance but the things I'm doing to it are getting done before I register it. Brake lines are also a necessity lol. Boss is on vacation for two weeks starting friday so I will have plenty of time to work on it and test these things out. I'll friend request some of you and personal message you if I have any more questions. Appreciate the help!

I accepted.

It's still best for you to ask the forum as a whole instead of any one person, though, unless there is something really particular that only one person can answer.
