bronco heads

someone who has done this talk to me. i am building an engine [302] for my 92 big bronco and can find a few gt40 heads but they need work or they are very expensive. there are a lot of gt40p heads already reworked and aren't nearly as high in price. what has to be done to be able to use my stock headers with gt40p heads? i have read conflicting issues about doing this. some say very little change to make it work and some say it won't work. i would like to know which route to take. thanks in advance for your input!! david g

the GT40P heads are a pain, you see them cheaper because of this. your headers will not work with out signifficant modification. most i have seen either dent the **** out of the header tubes to clear the spark plugs or in extreme cases cut/reweld etc..

what else are you doing to the motor? have you considered a 5.8 swap, you will get more for your money and its a drop in conversion.

The 5.8 is a very good motor. I'm working on building mine up but it still runs strong at 300k!

Get Ford Racing shorty headers and they'll fit perfectly.

I can't remember what headers I got but I only had to barely bend in 2 of my header tubes to work with P heads.

thanks guys for your input! to answer kemicalburn's question; i am doing a complete rebuild from the oilpan up. i have considered a 5.8 swap; but wondered if my computer would work for that engine and also how much worse my gas milage would be. this is a work/hunt/fish/play truck and it goes somewhere every day; so gas is a concern. i have bought a roller block to rebuild so i can still work while working on that engine. its a 302, didn't pay much for it, could still buy a 5.8 without much loss. got alot to consider. thank you all again dgriffin

the computer is the easy part and very common for your year bronco, just need a 5.8/e40d computer from 89-94, if you paid more then $50 i would be amazed.
the 5.0 wiring harness is a direct bolt on to the complete 5.8 you get from a wrecking yard or wrecked rig.

I did the 5.8 swap about 5yrs ago in an 88 bronco that had the 302/AOD combo. I actually gained about 1mpg city/hwy over what the 5.0 was doing.

I know have a 94 with a very mild built 5.8. 4.88 gears, E4OD tranny 35" tires and weight 5700lbs. I get 10-12 city and 15hwy.

do some searches on 5.8 swap. i think you may just change your mind.
