I weld spacers under the bed floor to support the sheet metal. My truck is loaded all the time and I've never had a problem.

THanks! The bed I have has rectangular channel steel running side to side at each bolt hole. I'm told there's reinforcing within the channel at each bolt hole. .... Where did you put the spacers? Can you upload a photo showing them?

Sorry, no photo available. However, I cut a hole in the bottom of the channel large enough to slide a spacer with a three-quarter inch ID through and then welded the spacer to the channel. Then I drilled a half inch hole in the bed for for the bolt to go through. I used the factory carriage bolts and pounded them into the holes to make the holes square and keep the bolts from turning.

That's really helpful. I appreciate the info. I'm trying to picture it in my mind. Is the spacer round for the bolt to go thru, and the spacer is as long as the height of the channel - so the spacer spreads and carries the weight ?

Yes, though square would work fine too, yes, and yes.
