81 stepside a/c

i got this truck over 10 yrs ago and finally decided that i want to repair the a/c. the problem that i encountered is the placement of the compresor. i've been looking for a diagram of a complete engine bay so as to decide which brackets to use to mount the compressor. i have both sets of brackets one to mount the compressor side ways and the other to mount it vertical. which one is right? can anyone help me out?

1981: Two different types of A/C, the parts do not interchange!

1) Factory installed integral A/C is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are located in the same panel as the heater controls.

2) Dealer installed Economy A/C is not combined with the heater. The two A/C switches are located on a bezel.

Flareside = Ford, a Stepside is a Chevrolet.

Nobody is answering because you're not giving enough information.

Bill has already explained the parts are different depending on factory or dealer A/C.

You have factory, OK, that's a start.

Now, what engine? Ford had many different possible configurations.

Please provide all the basic information whenever you ask a question out here - what year, model, engine size, transmission, 2WD or 4WD.

It would also be appreciated if you went HERE and finished filling out your profile; what you enter in the Location field of the 3rd pane will show up in the top-right of each of your posts, thanks.

It's an F100 so it doesn't have 4WD.

That's fine, my statement was more rhetorical than anything and is directed at the lurkers in addition to him.

I'm just asking that he provide full information when he asks questions out here, that's the main point....

Before anyone could answer your question, they would need to know which type of A/C your truck has.

Now that we know that, we need to know what the engine size is.

The biggest problem on FTE is, some people ask questions without listing a single shred of evidence of what the hell they're working on.

when i buoght the truck it had a 460. i didn't like to feed the monster, so i installed a 89 302 roller with a stock mustang cam. the first time i repaired the ac(factory air)
i had to hunt for 4 months to find a bracket to mount the compressor in a vertical direction. that bracket fit but had a harmonic vibration bad enough to break the bolts holding it on. i found another bracket about a year ago that mounted the compresor in a horizontal position. before i do the work with a similair result, witch way is the most likely way the truck came from the factory?

No 1981 F100s came with 460s in them from the factory. If you post a picture of the Certification Label on the driver's side door jamb, we can tell you a lot about how it was originally built.

In 1980/81, the parts book says they used a York compressor mounted on its side, I attached a bunch of pictures that should help. (The picture of the 1988/89 configuration is just FYI.)

No 460's in F100's after 1976 / No 460's in F150's after 1979.
