Anyone know off hand what the pinion nut on a 9" needs to be tightened to? The 3rd member uses a solid spacer in place of a crush sleeve so thats not a problem.
There is no torque spec on the pinion nut - it's tightened to achieve a specific pinion bearing preload (measured in in-lbs of torque to turn the pinion gear) after the pinion has been shimmed to the proper depth. Check here: http://www.drivetrain.com/ Scroll down the L bar to "Differential & rear end parts" then to FORD, 9" in the main window.
Uhm... As i said, there is a solid spacer in place of the crush sleeve, the diff has already been set up i had to replace the yoke and i don't know what to tighten the pinion nut to.
As he said, you don't tighten the pinion nut to a specific torque. You tighten it until you have the right bearing preload, which would mean the amount of effort to turn the pinion gear. The measurement you're looking for is 22-23 in-lbs.
