Buying another Excursion, which one?

Ok I have the choice of a 2002 limited with the V10 and 120K miles..... or a 2000 with the 7.3 Diesel and 199K..... both trucks are in nice condition.... a friend of mine is leaning heavy on the diesel and I like the low mileage of the V10. I would only be driving this vehicle around 5K miles a year and would tow a few times. How many miles could I expect from the 7.3 Diesel? Thanks.

Personally, I'd go the V-10. Lower miles, lower maint costs, and you don't really need a diesel if you only plan to tow "a few times". If you planned on towing a lot, then the diesel probably would be the better choice. You didn't include prices. If the diesel is significantly cheaper (doubtful) that would sway in its favor. Good luck!

Yep,,, x2 price does come into play, but from the sound of your plans, the V10 should work just dandy!

If you're not going to drive it often, then the V10 makes more sense. Maintenance will cost less also. Diesels don't like to sit, even legendary ones!

The mileage is not a concern on the 7.3, you could easily get 400-500,000 miles out of it. Several members are well on their way ( just ask Toreador Diesel!). But for your purposes.....the V10 makes sense.

Unless there's a huge money difference..... Maybe you could fill in a couple more blanks on that angle??

Both vehicles are 10K.... I would seem to tow more than I thought. I have classic cars and will be towing them to shows and events. Im leaning towards the diesel. Thanks.

10k is a little steep imo for the v10 especially with gas prices. Id pay no more than 8k for the v10.

I know in my area, the price of gas is pretty close to the price of diesel. the diesel is going to get significantly better mileage than the v10. costs of parts is more but if properly maintained it will run forever.

I have 118,000 on my oo' V10. no issues. I would go with the V10. I know people say 199,000 miles is no biggie on a 7.3 but that is still alot of miles.

For what its worth, I spend $200 every 15,000 miles for maintenance on my diesel. Thats two (2) synthetic oil changes, two (2) oil filters and a fuel filter.

Why not? What happens to them if they sit? My 7.3 sits 6 months out of a year. We have a 6.9 that sits for years at a time. 94.5 7.3 that sits all summer and used all winter. No idea where all this "diesels don't like to sit" comes from. I am curious where this saying comes from.

You're right, I don't know exactly where that comes from either. I defer to you who actually OWN a diesel.

The only thing i would say in my defense is that, from my perspective, it seems like there's a difference between 'storing' a rig for the winter (and the preparations that entails) and just 'not driving it very much'. Maybe I am wrong?

If I have repeated something that is not true please set me straight.

Thanks,
Karl
EDIT: upon further reflection, I do know where I heard this. It was in a lot of posts when I was deciding for myself which to buy (gas/diesel). It was not the deciding factor, but one of several. Come to think of it peace2peep has said something similar about sitting not being a problem.....hmmm. Maybe an urban legend needs to be killed off?

I think it is less an issue of sitting and more an issue of mostly short trips with few long trips that could be a problem for diesels. Though since the 7.3 does not have EGR etc, it may not be an issue.

I have had both 7.3 and V10. I like both. If I was in your shoes, for the same money I would choose the 7.3 if they are in similar condition and rust free.
