The only thing i would say in my defense is that, from my perspective, it seems like there's a difference between 'storing' a rig for the winter (and the preparations that entails) and just 'not driving it very much'. Maybe I am wrong?

If I have repeated something that is not true please set me straight.

Thanks,

EDIT: upon further reflection, I do know where I heard this. It was in a lot of posts when I was deciding for myself which to buy (gas/diesel). It was not the deciding factor, but one of several. Come to think of it peace2peep has said something similar about sitting not being a problem.....hmmm. Maybe an urban legend needs to be killed off?

Yeah I really don't think sitting is bad. However you mention constant short trips which really isn't good for any motor. With constant short trips where the motor doesn't heat up to operating temp condensation builds up inside the motor and carbon builds up. Gas engines heat up faster which I believe makes them better for the short every day trips. However I have friends and know of many other people with diesels that treat them just like gas engines. Start and run over here and shut them off, start again run a mile over there and shut them off, over and over again and not have problems you would think they should have.

It may all be just old time stuff when leaded gas was around and rich running carbs were on top of motors and it took 2 hours to get a diesel started with a small briggs motor. Now days maybe none of this stuff matters any more.

For long term storage the only thing I do besides cleaning the vehicle is fill the gas/fuel tank to keep condensation out. Then change oil in spring/when vehicle is pulled out to be used. Even our vehicles that sit 5 or more years at a time.

I have had both 7.3 and V10. I like both. If I was in your shoes, for the same money I would choose the 7.3 if they are in similar condition and rust free.
I have been checking out Diesel fuel here and one speedway has it for $3.60 a gallon which is great. I see diesels gets better mileage also. I had the V-10 getting 11.8 on the highway, thats horrible. Were going to look at the Diesel tomorrow or Saturday.

Diesel, they sound cool, go longer per tank and the 7.3s are getting rare. So they seem to hold value better. I drove both V10 and 7.3, went with the diesel because of the above and I am like the idea of being able to run alternative fuels in the event I have to. Wink Wink Put some money into it and get a good programmer and it will run liked a rapped date. I dont tow much but theirs nothing like the look on peoples faces when they see the beast drifting around a corner. lol

I will regret this most likely, but for $10,000, I will cut loose my 2003 Limited with 57,000 miles. I was asking $12,995. It has everything except the DVD system and 2nd row bucket seats. There are no known mechanical problems whatsoever. If the Ford dealer offered to fix anything today for free, I wouldn't even be able to take them up on the offer.

I am only doing this because I bought a new Suburban yesterday.

That's quite interesting. I'm glad to hear it from you firsthand, that means a lot. And you are right, short trips aren't exactly GOOD for gas engines either!

Even so, though, it doesn't change the fact that my wife wouldn't live with a diesel. And we all know...a happy wife is a happy life!

I think the V10 has worked out well for my situation. I love my Ex more and more every day. It's my DD and yet I wish I could drive it even more. Ha!

Karl.

I totally understand a happy wife deal!

If the X was my daily driver I would have a gas as well. Not only because they are more suited for every day short drives and stuff but they heat up much faster in winter. Even with a remote start a diesel takes forever to get even luke warm in winter just idling.

My wife drives "her Excursion" pretty much every day, more so in the winter,,, if you use that little extension cord stickin out of the front of it in the winter = much warmer truck quicker and easier to start,,, just sayin. And VaSherf,,, had we not just bought an 01 F350 CC/DRW/4x/7.3 as standby for the Ex, I would be bringing you $$$!!

On the diesels sitting, I think this comes from way back, at least I remember it from then (not THAT far back!) but I do remember hearing it. Mostly because the seals would dry out and they would start leaking just sitting there, I grew up on a Volunteer Fire station, and the 2 diesels we had would be started and run every week, keep in mind, these were the older trucks, with older seals, I do think the newer seals might have differing compounds/make-up that keeps them from drying out,,, just my .02!

I'd keep the X around for a reliable back up for when the burb breaks down.

Where are you located? State?

The Diesel I was going to look at and purchase has a salvage/rebuilt title. I got the VIN and pulled the carfax, with 25 records on it my wife says a big NO to this vehicle..... something is strange with it...... the owner claims it was never wrecked, but the carfax says it was.... well off to look at a V-10 tomorrow..... local, cheap and low mileage.....

Central Virginia. But you could drive it home anywhere. I would hop in it tonight and head to California.

Not much to say, the image is in my signature. Mineral gray with tan leather interior. 57,000 original miles. In pretty much excellent condition inside and out. V-10, 4x4. B F Goodrich put on by dealer when I bought it, tires still look like new. AM/FM/CD6. Clear title.

Also have 4 new extra wheels for the vehicle (just like what's on it). They go with it.

I just have too many cars and trucks sitting around now. 2 new Impalas, 2 Ford Crown Victorias, 4x4 Explorer, new Tahoe, new Suburban, company car, etc...
