good coolant flush product?

Anyone had any good or bad experiences with coolant flushing products? or is it all the same animal?
Or would you recommend just a garden hose through the whole cooling system?
Also. anyone have a write up on how to install a cooalnt filter? etc.

If you have a tractor or heavy truck dealership nearby, most of the time they will have something of a mild acid that is sold by the gallon. Ours was labled by Fleetguard and sold at an IH dealer. A gallon would be good for two or three flushes on something our size. I haven't had noticable cleaning action with stuff off the chain store's shelves.

Not to threadjack but I've always wondered about doing a chemical flush -- is there a risk of putting pinhole leaks in the heater core or radiator?

Do you jave a certain kind of contamination or just a preventative maintenance thing? Depends what you are trying to get rid of as to what chemical to try.

preventative maintenance, got 4 gals of fleet charge. gonna try the coolant filter set up before i start hcanging everything out.
New thermostat
New waterpump
Fresh coolant
Coolant filter

Another question would be i have seen the generic layout of the coolant filter setup but where do the hoses actually go from and to???

In that case I would just drain everything, radiator, block plugs, heater core. Run some clean water through it and then reseal and refill. Let the coolant filter clean the contaminats out.

Eallend,

you need to do a search on topics like that. There are several threads on here that show what others have done. To do a search, go to the main page, click the box in the upper right hand corner that says "search this forum" and type in keywords to search for.

Read through this one it has a lot of links in it and pics too. Many different ways of plumbing a coolant filter have been tried. Some with bypass manifolds, some with ball valves to change the filter. I kept mine as simple as possible. Here are some pics.

Hmmm. okay.
So the "Inlet side of the head needs to have the hose ran to the heater core and the outlet should be ran to the water pump. correct?
I have a manual transmission so i don't have to worry about any T's for trans cooler lines, correct?
So the only plumbing should be those 2 hoses? Also read somewhere about bypass valves, bypassing the heater core during the summer so as not to overheat or something? Ring any bells fellas?
Or is it sort of unnecessary, not really sure what he was talkikng about

out from block-into filter-out from filter-into heater core-out from heater core-into water pump.
You see Eallend, it was there all along. The only thing that you really need to know, is that the coolant flows from the port above the passengers side head (from out of the block) to the port on the water pump, so the hose from the port on the block, goes to the "in" side of the filter head. The "out" side of the filter head goes to the water pump. It really doesn't matter where on that loop the heater core is installed it does not have a flow direction. If you have a tee in the line with a hose going to the bottom of the radiator, that is a trans fluid warmer for your auto trans, leave that hose alone.

It's just confusing the hell out of me, its hard as heck trying to go on just pictures and words on here.
Mac your setup shoes one hose going from the block to the inlet
And another hose going from outlet to heater core. right? those are the only hoses i see.
Which makes me think there must be some sort of T in order to plumb all the necessary areas.
In order to get from block to filter from filter to heater core there would only be 2 hoses. and no return to the water pump. But if i run from block to filter, then filter to water pump, it would be correct but no heater core.
I'm still Green on this whole cooling system thing.
So i would have to have 2 T's, one on the inlet and oen on the outlet,
SO the only way i can see it working, considering there are 2 fittings on the heater core, 2 on the filter head, and 2 more for the b lock and water pump.
WOULD BE!:
Block to inlet with a T, from T to heater core.
From water pump to outlet with a T, and on the otehr side of the T run a hose to the other naked port of the heater core. only way that i can wrap my head around this concept.
I know i'm a pain in the *** but i promise im good for something! just aint cooling systems apparently
sorry guys

I can't tell mac but it seems in the picture like you have water pump to heater core, heater core to outlet, inlet to block.
corse i can't tell because our trucks plumbing is very different
