Exhaust pipe sizes

I would like to put duals onto my 94 with a 302. What would be the best size of pipe to put on? I'll Y it out after the cats and I would like to take them out the sides. I need the best I can for pulling and get up and go power.

Is it a stock engine? Are you planning on headers? Plan on mufflers, or is this straight pipes?

If it's stock, I'd say go with 2 1/4 - 2 3/4". No larger because you will lose torque. If you run headers and no cats then you'd want to run 2 1/2 - 3" ( but 3" duals is iffy because I've heard the cops will pull you over for it being too loud.)But to answer your question, go with 2 1/2" for stock application.

I wanted a set-up like this on my truck (94' F-150 w/302), but I want to add headers and somehow duals, but I don't know what is the best way. I think I would go with Hedman of Flowtech Headers, 2 1/5" pipe with flowmaster 30 or 40 series mufflers and a gutted cat. All this into a Y - pipe. I think that would work.

I would go with dual 2 1/4" if you are going to leave it stock or slightly modified, and go 2 1/2" if you plan on serious mods. I have a 460 with dual 2 1/2" and was told that I would lose lowend power if I went bigger. Hope this helps.

Summit Racing sells a 2 1/4 dual exhaust kit made by Hooker that bolts right to the manifolds or shorty headers. My father and I put that setup on his 85 and it worked great. Just add your own mufflers. The kit is like $145.00 or so. On my 94 with a 302 I have the factory y pipe with a hollow front cat in to a high flow single 3 inch cat in to a 40 series single 3 inch in dual 2 1/4 out then out the back through 3 1.2 by 18 inch stainless tips. I also have a set of Flowtech shorty headers. It sounds great and I can feel the increase in power. Hope this helps.
