Hello all, I have the timing cover off my 4.9 300 6 (1988 F150). The engine has about 350,000 on it... I have the timing cover off so I can replace the crankshaft seal and put one of those sleeves on the balancer and replace the seal. It started slinging oil out recently. My question is... should I replace the timing gears? Both are in excellent condition (it appears). Stuff these days is made so cheap I don't know if I would really accomplish anything replacing the good ol American gears (even with the mileage) with a chinese set from Auto Zone or O'Reilly's.
Interesting project you've got going there. With that many miles on this engine, makes you wonder just how much of a can worms you may not want to begin opening up.
Hopefully you won't regret not replacing your front main bearing..(and of course once the pan is off, you my as well replace ALL bearings, and depending on the year, the rear main seal)
Hopefully you can keep most of the old gasket material from dropping into the oil pan (may I suggest a shop vac to help while scraping)..
81-F-150-Explorer in 80-86 has a 300 I-6 with over half a million miles on it and I don't think he's ever replaced his timing gears.
I've read the tales of others here who have gone to replace those things, getting the gears off "the right way" requires special pullers that nobody can find or afford, which leads to all sorts of drama as people destroy things while removing them using other methods.
