Ahhh, XP is wonderful, W98 was very bad. The last operating system from MS that was any good b4 XP was W 3.11.
All you have to do is share a directory and make sure all of your network computers have the same workgroup. Check your help wizards. DO NOT share the Windows directory tho. You WILL need to install programs on all of your machines. It is not a simple job to run most programs from another user's machine. You can easily share data and files. The registry put an end to most simple program sharing.
Really file sharing and device sharing is the only real practical thing for a network. Most of the time installing a program on any computer from which you want to use it is the only way to go. So yeah, set all computers to same workgroup and set any files to share.
My two cents, I liked Win98se and winXP, all the rest are a pain. Well, 2000 is pretty decent, some like it over XP. 3.11, I barely remember what that one was like. 95, me, bleh
I remember Dos 1.x... I have used all of the operating systems for the PC except W-Server2000 and W-NT. W2000 had hardware issues that kept it from operating properly on several machines. Gates in his omniscient wisdom would not allow anyone to make simple interrupt changes. W-ME was a complete joke. W-XP home edition is another joke so if you are using that one I sympathize. I used Amiga Dos but not any of the apple op systems. I liked the old Amiga machines. They were more powerful in some ways than the fairly fast machine I am using at the moment. Great multi tasking that made/makes Windows of any flavor look sick!
Linux can be a bear to set up, but it's a great OS, I got MAndrake 9 right off the website (free download) I'm on cable. wouldn't reccomend trying to dl it over dial up.
I have run RedHat and SUSE and they were a bear to set up especially with state of the art hardware and no drivers. That was a couple of years ago and from what I have heard they have made some great strides with the setup. I figure I will give it a shot about a year or so from now. Maybe even Lindows.
All users running Winblows XP so they can play games use Ms office etc;
Slackware box hosting all mp3s and user files...everyone has an acct and everyone has access to the mp3s. (12gig collection being shared over the 2 networks in the house, wifi and wired) anyway it works great...I dont know what else you'd need to share.
I got the home version Eric, I just get tired of downloading all the security patchs for XP...enough holes to drive a Mack truck through! I think I like '98 because I use it so much at work, and thats what I learned on...glad to see your a life member bro! Got one more payment on my life membership! I'm gonna go all the way to benefactor life if I can!
Condolences on the home version... I use the corporate version with SPak1.
It is always tough to deal with change
I signed up for a five year membership the first time. A life membership was $100 then. When I signed up for a second 5 yr stint the people at the headquarters sent me a nice letter to get me to convert to a life membership. At that time it was $500 and I went ahead and did it. I have been very happy every since.
