Can I flat tow without an engine?

I'm looking at a 1984 Bronco2 manual tranny and manual transfer case. The engine is removed. I would pick it up on the way home from school. I live 400 miles away but would pick it up and tow for 250 miles. I don't really want to drive back down with a trailer to get it.

I've done some reading and the consensus seems to be I can tow it without disconnecting driveshafts with transfer case in N and tranny in gear. Is this the way to go? Any suggestions? Do I need to support the rear of the transmission?

Thanks,
Dane

I used to drive b2's

Towing with the xfer case in neutral and the trans in gear seemed to be the way that other always towed their "2's" when behind an rv. I think you'd be ok.

Of course, You should check to see that the trans is secured in a fashion similar to the angle that it would be in when an engine was attached...( so that any odd angle may be avoided while towing since the driveline WILL be turning while en-route)..

I personally would check the temps of the trans and x fer case by touch after approx 5 miles or so.

I personally would chose a route that would allow for speeds of 45mph max or so.

If a Manual T-Case is in neutral, it doesn't matter what gear the Manual trans is in, right?

Without an ENGINE, I would think that the FRONT of the trans will need to be supported and fastened down really good, right?
Too dark to go check now, but I expect without an engine to hold the trans bell up, there would be damage with trans bouncing up and down.

I agree with Torky2, make sure the front of the transmission is supported securely. With the T-case in neutral it does not matter what gear the tranny is in (it can be in neutral as well).

Pulled it home last night. Front hubs unlocked trans case in N. Disconnected and tied up rear driveshaft. Had no troubles. Pulled it back at around 61mph since that's where my pickup would downshift lol. Ended up driving about 8 hrs. Would have been 6 hrs anyway without 4 more wheels.

Thanks for the replies.
