Discontinuation.

I've always wondered why they stopped making the F-100, seeing as how it's such a workhorse.

Could anyone answer as to why they did?

Welcome to FTE

F100 sales began dropping off when new F150 introduced in 1975.

1980/83 F100's were advertised by FoMoCo as a Light Truck. No Super Cabs available (4WD last available in 1976). Largest available V8: 302 2V.

Some had "Swiss Cheese" frames, different front/rear brakes, suspension than other F100/150's, including 5 lug 4.50" bolt circle wheels.

300 I-6 was standard equipment and besides the 302, some 1982/83's came with the anemic 255 V8 and some came with the awful 3.8L V6.

When the new Ranger was introduced in March 1982 as a 1983 model, F100 sales took a nose dive. Was cancelled at the end of the 1983 model run.

150 also aligned up with the 250, 350 and on. It was as much of a model change driven by swapping to unleaded gas. IMHO

Both are half ton trucks, what ever that means today.

The EPA was starting to impose emissions and CAFE standards for passenger vehicles, and for trucks up to 1/2 ton. But larger trucks were either exempt or had lower standards to meet, so all the manufacturers started making "heavy half" pickups that would classify them above the 1/2 ton cutoff. Ford F150, Chevy C1500, etc. They figured customers would all move to the slightly heavier duty version, but the demand for a light duty pickup never went away, so in 83 I think it was, they finally killed off the F100 and replaced it Ranger, which was a step up from the very light duty Ford Courier. So essentially the Ranger could replace 2 models for customers who just want a light duty pickup.
