Strange Intermittent Noise....
There is a strange noise coming from my 2004 EB AWD. It almost sounds like a bearing going bad. The sound is speed-dependent (worse at about 35-45). It does it some days, not others. It does it in 2WD or 4WD. Sometimes it is there first thing in the morning, then not there in the afternoon, or vice-versa. I can drive for 4 or 5 miles and it suddenly starts, or suddenly goes away. I have had the tires looked at carefully and also the bearings – no one could find a problem. When it is at its worst, I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel and the floor board. If I juke the wheel it seems to go away as I load/unload the vehicle left or right. So far i have been to two places and they are unable to diagnose it. I know that is not a very scientific explanation, but the best I can give. And yes, service staff have driven it and of course it does not make the sound. Any basic thoughts? I am totally baffled.<O

I actually had the clutch pack replaced. That still chattered and bound for several hundered miles and seemsfine now. They used the new higher viscosity fluid (per Ford TSB) and it has added friction modifier in it. I am stumped.
