I know this may not pertain to this exact model forum but the people who peruse this one have always been the most knowledgeable. I have an 06 milan with 115 k on it. Today on the way to work my wife was braking as she exited the freeway and she hit a drainage grate and heard as she described a chain that has broken off a bike. The brake pedal went straight to the floor and the car didn't slow down. She said she had to continually pump the! brake pedal in order to stop. I went and looked the car and found nothing, no leaks no hung calipers everything was in order. I road tested it and it braked great. An hour ride home from work amd still no problem. It freaks me out i cant find an answer as i have a 1 yr old that rides in the car regularly and am scared it will happen again
Any ideas of what to check? Master cylinder maybe? Thanks joe

I think the excitement of the situation understandably made it seem more then it was.
It was most likely the ABS firing off due to the loss of braking traction on that / those wheels. The vehicle has 4 wheel disc brakes and if both a front and rear wheel were firing off you can reduce your braking close to 50% if it's firing off heavily.
Vehicles with 4 wheel disc share close to 55% front 45% rear braking bias so even when both rear brakes are going through the apply-release ABS activity, and the slippage is high enough for the ABS software to electronically proportion down to a lower rear pressures (both wheels), the transition from normal braking can get scary if you've never experienced it before.
Thats what i thought but it lost the brakes for the rest of the trip to work , another 5 miles. The was no brakes and the only way she stopped was by either continuosly pumping the pedal which continued straight to the floor when pushed or gently pulling the e brake. Ive never heard of abs kickin on and then not shutting off. She called me while driving and verified no lights and no message from the message center was every on. I tried researching and there have been a hand full of this case but no one yet has posted an answer as most of these cars that exhibited this problem have been in an accident which totaled the car, and the investigation into it is not published. Im contemplating calling Ford customer service but i know what theyll say. Take to dealer to duplicate and we all know it never gets duplicated there.
