Broken axle shaft

I am having trouble removing my axle shaft from the drivers front. It broke in two pieces. The piece that is inside the axle I cant get it out.
I have been beating and prying, but cant free it up, Is there something i'm overlooking or do I just need a bigger hammer

It should just slide out. Was it the inner is outer shaft that broke?
