OK, so nothing has changed over time with the oil used But you said you changed to a Fram filter, when you had been using Motorcraft, or Purolator, so the Fram is a change & since its a cold problem, happened suddenly after the last oil & filter change, move that filter high up on your suspect list, as they're known to cause start up noise!!!!!
Seeing as how the valve covers are off, any sludge, gum, or varnish showing on the top end????
I have used nothing but Valvoline 5-30 since I bought the truck 75k ago.
Unless they changed the formula, I cant see why it had no tick and at150 it started.
I think I am going to try and change the lash adjusters while the valve cover is off
OK, assuming you've been using Valvolene white bottle 5W-30, PQIA recently tested its 100c viscosity at 10.54 cSt. The 30wt Hot/100 deg C viscosity range is from 9.3 to 12.5 cSt, so, by adding the Seafoam to a 10.54 cSt lube, you lowered its hot viscosity range toward the lower end of the 30wt range.
So, you can see what my thinking is. If going back to the specified Motorcraft or Purolator filter doesn't fix the tic, try a lower viscosity 5W-30 lube, that has a good detergent ad pack, to see if the lower hot viscosity & extra ad pack detergents will get in there & tidy things up like the Seafoam seemed to have done.
Don't think your going to find any valve train lash adjusters on your 4.0L, unless your including shims as adjusters.
More thoughts for consideration, keep us posted on your trouble shoot.
Well I bought 6 new lash adjusters(lifters), figuring one was not pumping up.
As I was changing them out, the last one to be exact. As i rotated the cam/engine to get the front rocker out, I saw the roller was worn to S H I T. Rotated the cam more and the lobe is destroyed.
Dang, looks like that lifter was siezed & put the hurt on the cam lobe!!!!
I see light varnish, but nothing that would suggest that it might cause any problems any where near the kind of situtation you found. Kinda looks like maybe a mechanical lifter failure of some sort. Will it come out????
Got a new cam and 6 rockers. Stripped one of the holes out for the cam bolts. Have to pickup a helicoil.
Has to buy a special set of tools to time the engine OTC 6488
It is amazing the power that was lost little by little
I can not chirp the tires going to 2nd gear @ 40mph
Also found out this engine(possibly the right head) is not original to this truck.
Passenger valve cover has 50,684 written on it in paint pen. Also have some number written in paint pen on the back of the passenger head.
After I got done with the engine work and test driving, I pulled it back in the garage and put on my Stainless Gibson Exhaust. Not loud, but it is slightly noticeable
Wow, you've been buisy on this one. Ever figure out what was going on with the cam & lifter??? After reviewing the photo you posted, I noticed that the galled area on the cam didn't appear to be on the lobe!!!! Do you suppose it was a surface material problem with the cam, or did the lifter seize for some reason????
