I have a 2007 F150 5.4L daily driver and it has a 355 open rear. I want to make it a limited slip rear. What would be the best Differential to put in it? Summit has Auburn and Yukon, are they any good for the $$ 350-450? and are they easy to install? I am very mechanical but have never played with a rear. Like I said I am not doing off road just daily driving but have a bad icy driveway in the winter and it is hard to take off with out spinning the tire.
Those are both reputable companies but I don't have any experience with then in these trucks. I'm sure someone else will chime in that does have some experience. As far as how hard to put in? They require quite a bit of patience to set the backlash and what not. And You will also need some specialty tools to complete the job.its not impossible at all.
Good luck
Thanks, I did some you tube look ups and saw some but I will have to do much more looking. So I would just put my old 355 ring & pinion gears on the new differential? Sorry I never worked on them.
Yes you would ideally use the same ring and pinion. Remember if you spun both rear tires on ice you loose lateral traction. Not good for side hills. I like open diffs on ice.
I recently had a yukon duragrip installed on my 2004 that previously had an open diff.
It's quiet and seems to work just fine. Like you, I'm not an offroader, although I do spend lots of time on gravel.
I can't really compare to the other options as I've never tried them. The dura grip works fine, though.
I had it installed at Randy's Ring and Pinion. I'm pretty handy myself (I replaced all the timing gear/phasers myself), but the rear has all kinds of considerations (backlash, etc) that I didn't want to deal with in the cold outside on my gravel driveway. Maybe if I had a warm garage...
