Hey,
My sub lists recommended box size of 1.5 cu ft. What are the negatives of using a smaller box....say 1.1 or 1.2? Also, it is listed as 150 rms @ 4ohm, what would be the effects of running @ 120 rms?
it shouldnt matter much, sub output will be a little different but not much. manufactors ususally give a recommened range on box size so u should be fine, average space for a 12" woofer is about 1v3.
also, driving a woofer under the RMS isnt going to hurt it, just be careful to how the gains are set. running it at 120 instead of 150 would just mean the output wont be as loud, but 30w isnt gunna be a dramatic difference. what kinda woofer is it?
When you make a box smaller, you make the sub more inefficient. This means you actually need more power. If you're going to "underpower" it, you actually should make the box a tad bigger. However, with a sub whose RMS is only 150, it's probably pretty efficient, regardless of box size. Underpowering a speaker doesn't hurt it, necessarily. Make sure that you don't clip the amp and go crazy with the volume. You can cause thermal failure of the sub if you're irresponsible. I would just try to stick with the manufacturers rec. enclosure size and set my gains accurately.
