I'm having trouble with warm starts. Once started, runs fine. Checked the IPC sensor and no oil in the connector. 2002 excursion with 215,000, 7.3. Recent oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter change done by myself. Rotella synthetic. Was having the problem before the changes. Have been running synthetic for about 40,000 miles. Any other suggestions of why it might have trouble starting? Thank you.
Sounds like "injector" o-rings are worn. I had a problem with a hard start cold (20 sec crank), then no start at all when it was warmed up. When the oil warms up and thins out worn o-rings bleed down enuff to not get the psi up and therefore no fire even thought the IPC/IPR/HPOP are doing their jobs.
Check your oil level in your reservoir up top. Should be 1/2 to 1 inch from the top. Pull your IPR and clean it up by following the IPR cleaning thread you can find on here and put it back ensuring it's snugged up especially the tin lock nut.
Still no joy? Time to pop off the vavle covers. Unless one has doen it before, I would recommened to anyone diggin in there for the first time to replace the gasket, UC harness, glow plugs and o-rings on the injectors all in one fell swoop. Not expensive, and you would need to dig in there someday soon anyway if you didn't.
That's just my thought. Good luck, and keep us updated as to what you do and the results.
Hello, it seems difficult to remove the IPR as it is covered by some type of sleeve. Where is the IPR cleaning thread (I found one by Kim Lux) and what/where is the tin lock nut? I can turn a wrench, but the Please advise. Thank you. Tommy
Hello again, I found out what the sleeve and tin nut are and removed them. problem now is I have an impact 1 1/8" and its too fat and long to fit with the metal tube in the valley. Back to the store....
Both sockets holes near the 1/2" ratchet sleeve are too small to allow the IPR through and thus the sockets will not fit. Make sure you get sockets with large holes. Maybe old school types. back to the store...
However, after removing the solenoid there was oil around the bottom of the IPR. Hopefully it's just the o ring. Anybody know what is the size of the o ring? Thank you.
Okay - found a deep socket with a larger interior hole and removed the IPR and replaced the O rings with a set from Bob at Diesel O Rings. The IPR did not appear "sticky" when pushed in with a small allen wrench per the cleaning directions. Drove it all day yesterday and no problems, in fact - it started quicker than before. My wife was driving it today and it died on her with no engine codes. She said it missed a couple of times before it died. She cranked it back up and drove it home (about 30 mile round trip - we made the same trip the day before). Any and all help greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!
Reckless, I saw on a previous thread with your warm start issues, someone mentioned the starter as the possible culprit. We had the started changed about a month ago - I just crawled under there and the starter says "re manufactured for General Motors". I told them I wanted Motorcraft - but you know how shops are. It is an AC Delco product. How can I check to see if it's pulling too much current after it warms up? Thank you.
Just ran a code check and came up with P1000 "monitor checks not complete" and P0603 "Internal ctrl mod kam error". I'm assuming the P0603 is from the CPS, but I just changed that out and didn't clear the codes after. I cleared the codes and ran it again, checked the codes and P1000 came up again. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.
