Getting ready to replace my tires on my 2000 Limited. Current size is P255 70R16. Question, can I go a size larger without rubbing against body parts? Thinking about going to P265 70R16.
Any other tire size suggestions would be appreciated.
I just got my tires changed a week ago and asked the dealer the same question. He said to stick with the 255's because there is a possibility of rubbing on the inner fender while turning sharp.
I was able to put 265 75 R16 (just as wide, but taller than what you are looking at) tires on my '97 Sport. MIne has the larger, gray fender moldings. I had to cut a piece of plastic off the inside, back corner on the front wheel wells to fit them. The piece of plastic I cut off was 1" x 1 1/2". You could probably get 265 70R16s on without any rubbing. Go to a tire dealer that will let you test fit them first. Discount Tire put mine on first to see if they would fit. The only way to know for sure is to try them. Depending on how your Explorer was put together, they may or may not rub.
The 255 60R16 would definately eliminate any rubbing since they are the same width as the stock 255 70R16. The only difference is that they are a smaller diameter. I gather from their first post though, that they wanted to go with a larger than stock tire, not smaller.
