I am looking at buying a 2000 powerstroke 4X4 with about 100K on it, the truck looks to be in excellent condition except after it was started. It started fine, no smoke, left to idle for about 5-10 minutes while I looked things over but when we started to drive the truck it let out a cloud of light colored smoke (not positive if it was white or blueish, it was hard to tell in the mirror) this happened a couple more times until it was all warmed up and the only smoke I could produce after that was when I really stepped on it and that was black and expected. I went back about 2 hours later and restarted the truck but no smoke, it was still pretty warm though.
I have searched through here about it and have read some great advice and heard many different opinions from air leak to hole in the cyl. wall. But I am still confused (maybe too many suggestions?)as to what I should do (buy or not), this truck is more than we wanted to spend right now but I really like the powerstrokes and hope it will last us a long time.
Any quick checks out there? What would you check? Any recomendations?
This isn't the only thing that could be causing it, but bad injector O-rings can cause a little smoke. My truck is in top shape, and it smokes a tiny bit when first started in the morning. I mean, it's barely visible. The smoke stops after about one minute. There are a lot of trucks for sale, and if it were me, I'd find one that didn't raise any questions.

I'll have to second that. Mine smokes a little bit when cold also. This is normal. Not sure why, but it is! My smoke is as Quadzilla's, barely visible. It looks white sometimes and blue at others. If this truck you are looking at still smokes after initial warm up.....about a minute, I would maybe stay away from it. As we have said, a little smoke is perfectly normal, but if it still smokes after a couple of minutes, and you are uncomfortable with this truck, I will have to agree with Quadzilla and pass on this one. There are plenty of others out there, so just be patient and the right one will come up. There is no need to spend that kind of money and have to second guess your decision right from the get go.
Since new, my '02 has smoked after idling. If I start when cold there is the usual puff or two of smoke. Then, should I idle for a while, when I start off again, a large puff of smoke, not very dense blows out. It does not do it at any other time, just after a prolonged idle. Of internest, my Semi did the same thing. I do not know why, but the semi did over 500,000 miles happily without a repair call.
Thanks for the input, I am going to check it out again tommorow to see if it does it again as well I will run the VIN numbers through Ford to see what history they have on it. I am not sure if I mentioned the light smoke was only when stepping on the peddle to start out or speed up (first 3 or 4 times only), at idle it was clear. You are right though, I should not buy it if I have any doubts 'cause last thing I need is to be wondering if the truck is going to get me there or not.
