engine knocking

i just bought a 1997 expedition with the 4.7 engine in it. it has a slight knock and rattle was wondering if the the timing chain could be making this sound. also my battery light is on the alternator was replaced but light is still on.

could be the VCT or piston slap or a host of other things.

Before you condemn any part remove the drive belts and start it up for about 15 seconds, being sure it is not the water pump or a tensioner or idler pulley bearing, the cheap stuff.
Just a thought!

I agree With John p3 . Isolate noise . Don't guess ! You can waste a lot of money guessing ! I have seen it happen . Hundreds or thousands of dollars spent , instead of replacing the bad $30.00 part first !
