Okay hope I didn't screw up I have a 79 Ford F 150 4 x4 it had a 351 modified engine I bought a 351 Windsor and trans to stick in the truck when I pulled a trance apart from the Windsor to replace the front seal on transmission I noticed some of the teeth on the fly wheel were chipped. The flywheel on the modified was in good shape And when I held the 2 on top of each other they were .the same size and same bolt pattern Now here's the question I never thought about this There are weights on both flywheels will the modified work on the Windsor motor
Yeah I don't think so. I'm trying to remember. But some of these engines are internally balanced and others are externally balanced. The 460 was both internally and externally balanced depending on year. Of the externally balanced engines, there may be different balancing weights, usually noted in ounces. If I remember right the 351W is externally balanced with 28oz. I don't know about the 351m.
Look in jegs or any other catalogs selling flywheels to see if the flywheel is the same for the 351M and 351W.
If its only the ring gear missing teeth, then swap ring gears. Manual right? Not possible with automatic flex plates.
To change the ring gently and evenly heat it with a torch. It will expand and slip right off.
Then you could use the same flywheel.
