It looks like I will have to replace the sending unit in my '88 Ranger Supercab 4x4. Does anyone have, or know where to find, pics of the fuel tank from above? Pics showing the bed removed and whether or not there is access to the sending unit from above.
Basically need to know if removing the bed is better, faster, easier than crawling underneath and dropping the tank.
It's much easier to access the sending units from the top. You should be able to unbolt the bed and tip it over to one side rather than completely removing it. The bed is bolted using Torx bolts that are known to be pretty tight, so be prepared for that.
For what I have heard/read it is easier to remove the bed, no worries about gas in the tank, broken tank hangers and the such.
My problem is the Bed Bolts... they can be a B!TCH !
Spray the bolt threads a few days before, spray every other day, top and bottom of threads before you attempt the bolt removal.
Get a couple of the T-55 (?) Torx Bits, I broke two getting my bolts out and even after spraying the bolts for a week before I still needed a hack saw to cut the tops off two of them and ended up replacing with all new bolts and clip nuts.
Taking the bed off may be the EASY approach to the tank fix but if it is the first time off for the bed take some time to prep the bolts and hope for the best.
