hello, I found a good deal on a explorer, it has a 4.0 v-6 its a 1991. the engine has 160,000 miles on it. is this too high of miles and should I keep looking. I know nothing about these engines, this has snappy power and sounds strong. any advice out there and how many miles do you have????? please help thanx!!!
these moter's are VERY relieable they run FOREVER there's many with 200k+ miles on them and 160 k miles is not that much for a 91 theise moter's are very strong id say go for it
I would have to agree. I have a 4.0 Liter in my 96 XLT with 144,000 miles on it. Still running strong. Nothing more than routine maintenance. (Knock wood).
Talked to my father-in-law last night and he said he had over 200,000 on his last Explorer (I think it was a 93) and was still purring. Had to rebuild the tranny, but after that long, who doesn't?

Try to find out how the car has been used, were there many previous owners in a short time, is the engine tuned to the limit or plain standard?
Have the engine checked by a pro for exessive wear, if it sounds fine than go for it.

I have a 92' with 120,000. The engine is great. I have a friend who put over 200,000. The only problem with the old Explorers is the rust. They all have a tendency to rust out along the rear lower side paneling. I replaced the dog legs once already.
My moms 92 EB 4x4 has 230 thousand, and my uncle's 91 XLT 4x4 has 400+ thousand. The only problems he has had were recently the A/C comp. locked up, and while he had it apart, he decided to change the whining power steeering pump that we all knowand love. The engine runs just fine. It had originally been used for a golf course for something, so he got it for cheap when 100k rolled around. I havent ever seen a Blazer make it that far
My 94 Ranger 4.0L has 155,600 one owner miles and runs perfect. Oil has been changed every 3000-3500 miles. I'd drive it anywhere today. A buddy of mine had a 92 Explorer 4.0L and it was traded at 186,000 miles; it was running great but he wanted a newer Explorer was all. There is a post in the Ranger forum titles "miles on your Ranger"; you may want to look at it for more feedback on the 4.0L.
Some people have said that the intake gasket has had problems. Symptoms are vac and coolant leaks. Myself, I'd just put a new one on while the motor was out and access was easy.
