Hi-I just installed a new 92 351 EFI for the first time and I can't get this thing timed right (misfiring). It's idling rough and it misfires especially on acceleration. How do I set the base timimg on these things? One place tells me that no timing adjustments are possible on the TFI-IV system and another place says that I have to unhook a wire to set base timing. The distributor only has one wiring harness connected to it. I just turned the engine to 10 degrees BTDC (from underhood sticker) and lined up the rotor to the #1 spark terminal. I've never worked on Fords so I don't even understand the timing pointer-it has sort of a flat edged triangle at the top with "TIME" and then a circular groove in the middle and a circular hole at the bottom. So I'm not even sure where to line up the timing mark on the crank pulley. Can anybody explain how to install a distributor and time one of these things?? Any advice is greatly appreciated
Coming off the module on the side of the distributor is a wiring harness. There is a wire conection with a plug in it.This is called the SPOUT.You must remove this to set the base timing. With the SPOUT connected the computer advances the timing making it impossible to set the initial timing. With the spout conection removed set the timing to 10 deg BTDC.Use the long straight edge on the far right side of the timing pointer assembly as the indicator. It helps if you paint the timing pointer edge and the 10 degree mark with white paint(white out works good).
make sure you didn't get any spark plug wires crossed or out of order. Always pays to dble check. Have you had the distribitor assy out? Did the truck have the same engine size (originally) in it that you replaced?......stay tuned....help is on the way....

Yeah they were both 351 EFI and I did have the distributor out-we put in a new longblock. When I put in this distributor I was thinking how easy it was (too easy) because I just turned the engine to 10 degrees BTDC and then dropped the distributor in and rotated it until the rotor was pointing at my #1 scribe mark on the distributor case. But after reading my manual it says something about lining up the leading edge of the shutter with the center of the switch. Does anyone know what this is about? Thanks for your input guys
I believe this is a refference to the PIP sensor in the dist.It is a pickup in the dist body and a shutter or set of vanes on the dist. shaft. It is a hall effect switch. It allows the computer to tell when #1 is firing. One of the vanes is wider and it creates a different signal when it passes over the PIP.If you line up #1 terminal with the rotor when installing the dist. This should align the PIP since it is indexed or fixed to the dist. body.I haven't seen a refference to this in my haynes manual for V8 engines using this set up.It just says to install it as mentioned above.
you may already have it fixed, but don't forget that the dist. shaft will rotate just a little upon insertion, due to the helical gears, so you have to back it up prior to assy so that , as it turns slightly upon assembly, it should line up. Just thought I'd mention this.....
Problem solved-You just have to disconnect the SPOUT connector before you time it at 10 degrees. Truck is purring like a kitten now. Thanks to all who replied
