My 95 F150 5.8 has a chirping noise under the hood. It is constant with the engine speed, and seems to be coming from the ac pully. Can the pully bearings be replaced, or does the entire unit have to go?
Good bet it's the AC pulley. My truck was making a chripping noise too. I squirt a little Tri-Flow lube between the outer pulley and the magnetic clutch on the front of the pulley and the chripping stopped. When it gets wet, it starts chripping again. I belive you can replace the clutch itself without having to remove the compressor, I think.
Ford had a TSB sometime back in '93,or early '94 for a chirping "belt" noise on 5.8L engines.I bought a new 1993 F-250HD 4x4 with the 5.8L engine, and this noise drove me crazy for about two months, before a friend(who was a Ford tech)showed me this TSB. Turns out the chirping noise was due to a pulley that had a extra groove in it,causing belt noise. I took it back to the dealership, and had the pulley replaced for free.I've forgotten which pulley was the culpret, however. It would be a good idea to replace the belt, too. Hope this helps.
In addition to the above suggestions, I know for a fact that the pulleys CANNOT be bent or even slightly warped. This will cause the serpentine belt to make this kind noise. I had a '86 LTD that had one pulley that was not running parallel, and the noise was embarassing. I had this one pulley fixed and it stopped. You could see a slight "wobbling" back and forth at idle. (it doesn't take much) Surpentine belts are "picky" about alignment & straight running pulleys!......
Does the chirping go away when it warms up? I have a 93 F150 5.8 and it chirps on cold start up. It goes away as soon as its warm. What the hell!! I was thinking a bearing but could it be an exhaust leak. The belt has less than 10k on it.
I had the exact same problem, I had the chirping coming from the AC pulley. It chirped all the time. I went to a parts store and bought a Goodyear gatorback serpentine belt, and not one single noise for 6 months since.
I had a cirp on my 94 I6 that turned out to be a power steeringpump that was failing. I couldn't seem to locate it until it REALLY started to sieze up and then it let the smoke out of my serp belt in very short order
I replaced the pump and belt and no more noise.
Now if I could only do something like that with the nieghbor kids....
Miy 93 chirps occasionally too. One thing that I found is that the water pump is driven off the back side of the belt and the pulley drum gets dirty from time to time. When I replaced my belt I cleaned the drum with brake cleaner and found it was greasey. After that all was well. Now whenever it starts to chirp I just run the engine and give the drum a quick squirt of cleaner and it stops again. I am not sure if this is good for the belt but it is still hanging in there so far. Also, the ideler and tensioner pulley bearings have very little if any grease in them. I popped the dust seal off mine to have a look and found they were dry although they were making no noise at all. I just pressed a little grease into them any they are still running. They are the original units and have over 315,000km on them.
