transmission question from a newbie
My truck is 2wd and has a straight 6 engine with 3 speed box. The gearbox is real tired and needs replacing. I live on the big island of Hawaii so do not have access to many part etc here (shipping from the mainland is expensive).
Anyway, someone here has an auto transmission for a 68 mustang at a good price, but I have no idea if it would fit.
Can anyone help me out with this? How do I work out if they are compatible?
cheers and thanks for the help!
if the engine in the Mustang is a small-block, the transmission would mate up to the engine.
you'd still be left with potential issues, like:
fitment of the transmission crossmember
driveshaft length, etc
those 3-speed manual transmissions are pretty tough- what problems are you having?
you may want to consider just having it rebuilt.
Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh trans introduced in 1963. Used in misc 1963/80 Passenger Cars, 1963/83 F100's, 1965/86 Econolines, 1966/77 Bronco's, 1975/86 F150's.
Parts EZ to find, try NAPA or a local indie autoparts store. Will need for sure:
Gasket set, small parts kit (washers/shims), front/rear bearings, (1) 1st gear syncro brass blocker ring, (2) 2/3 syncro brass blocker rings.

At the bottom of the steering column under the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.
In each lever is a rubber bushing and insulator. What happens: The bushings age crack, pieces can break off, the shift lever binds up between 1st & 2nd.
C5TZ-7343-A .. Bushing/Insulator Kit / Obsolete ~ Over 200 available NOS, but no one in Hawaii has any. Dunno if a similar kit can be bougfht from autoparts stores.

Swapping a Mustang A/T (assuming it's a C4 -11 trans pan bolt holes) will be more trouble than it's worth. FORGET IT!
The output shaft and extension housing are a different length than what was used in F100's, the manual control lever, kickdown rod will not work on any F100.
Trans mount different, correct 1967/72 F100 crossmember required, yadda yadda yadda.
You want an A/T that will work? Find a 1967/72 F100 240/300 short bed Styleside/Flareside (a stepside is a Chevrolet
) w/a C4 (only A/T available), swap everything over...including the drive shaft.
thats just the advice I needed
. I know nothing of cars and trucks - I restore old motorcycles but some days its just too wet here to ride so I need a truck too. When I saw this pickup for sale I just loved it. Now to get it running, then later, work on the body.Rebuilding the trans sounds like the way to go. I'll give it a shot.
