Yes get rid of all the smog junk and don't lose a second of sleep over it, and if so equipped make double sure you also lose that stupid heat riser butterfly valve between the passenger exhaust manifold and Y pipe.
thanks man. we had to cut the exhaust to get it out, and this truck does have one O2 sensor. Can I leave this out when i reinstall it or will the truck get stupid on me?
You didn't say if carb or FI?
If FI you have SD (Speed Density) injection.
The EGR system should be left in place and functional.
It doesn't limit power as it only mixes exhaust gases with the incoming fuel/air mixture under certain conditions. When you ask your engine for high power the EGR system is disabled.
It also reduces the combustion temps in the cylinder which reduces the engines octane requirement. What this means is that if the engine was on the limit of pinging then removing the EGR may cause it to start doing so.
You would then either have to use a higher octane fuel or retard the timing
One will cost you more money when you buy fuel and one will cost you performance and fuel mileage!
Don't forget to plug the air injection lines at the back of the cyl heads where the air gets injected there. On the HO there was a steel tube with an air check valve about centered on the intake and that smog pump was plumbed in there too.
its a speed density FI 351. the egr valve is in place and plugged in electrically and by vacuum. The pipe from the valve to the passenger exhaust manifold is capped. tis was done before i ever touched the truck. I am gonna go ahead and do away with the smog system along with all the BS that goes along with it. I am going to put the EGR back like I found it and go from there. Thanks again guys.

being a 85 it's not a FI 351W unless the FI was swapped on.. ya sure it aint a 5.0??
